I currently am looking to build a ht system. I've decided that I am going to go with separates. I will be building a 5.1 system to start with the possibility of upgrading to 7.1 in the future. My budget for the separates to drive the speakers is around 3k. The system will be in a 18 x 18 room with the ceiling starting at 9 ft and going to 12 ft. The listening preference is 80%tv/movies & 20% music. I am wondering what should be my approximate budget for speakers. Also looking for some speaker recommendations. I believe the one store in my area handles B & W, Triad, & PSB. I am not opposed to ordering online. Thanks in advance for the help.

I am in a very similar situation and am also interested in some speaker recommendations. My room is slightly smaller (13' x 18') but the speaker setup will be the same (7.1). I would say I am in the 60/35/5 split for TV/Video Games/Music and my budget is about what OP is looking to spend. The back four surround speakers will be in wall units and the front will probably be either shelf or floor standing units.

EDIT: I misread his post a bit about his budget. The speaker runs are already in for me, so I'm just looking for speakers and looking to spend around 2,500.

Budget what you can afford. I would not budget less for speakers than I budgeted for electronics, but that is just me. Buy the best speakers you can afford - likely they will outlast both your display and your electronics. $3k - $6k is about right for your budget on electronics. Figure part of that goes to subwoofage (maybe 1/5-1/3 depending on your priorities).

Most important is you buy what you like. It is your ears and your wallet . . .

I fully expect the speakers in my system to outlast everything else by a good many years. Hell - I think we all know someone who's kept the same speakers for 20+ years. Can you really say the same about their tv, receiver, etc?

Just food for thought.

These seem right in line with what I am looking for, that speaker recommender works great too. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be any place I can go and actually hear these speakers since I'm on the East Coast and they only look like they are sold online.

Can anyone give their thoughts on how these sound for movies/games?

Internet companies such as Aperion, Axiom, AV123, Ascend, Swans, HSU, SVS, etc can only be audition at your own home or at a customer's home. You need to call the company and ask if there is anyone in your location willing to let you audition. AV123 and Axiom have very active forums and you can go there and ask for an audition.

With these two budgets, my favorite selections would be the AV123 Rockets (when on sale) and the Swan Divas at Ozhometheater.

I'm on theeast coast also. But Aperion has a 30 day trial period. Shipping is included in the trial period, so if you don't like them send them back and it doesn't cost you a penny.

I have Aperion speakers and i'm very, very satisfied.
