Speaker Setup Advice (In-Walls)

I am currently doing some remodeling in my basement, and I would like to upgrade my speakers. I current have Polk In-walls (RT Series). They've been serviceable, but I would like to step it up.

I'm just thinking about replacing the LCR speakers for now. Due to WAF, kids, and the desire to maximize floor space, I can't have the speakers in the room. I do have a utility area behind my screen about 4' deep. Would floor standing speakers be OK? I know I would have to make bigger holes and get some custom grill material to mount to the wall. But is it OK to put them in that space? Or am I stuck going with enclosed In-wall speakers? Thanks for your help.

You are stuck with in-wall speakers if you want to maximize their sound. Speakers are designed with their cabinets in mind, and they need to be out in the open. Placing them in the wall will alter their sound and will resonate in the wall. In-wall speakers are designed with this in mind and sound better than other alternatives.
Thanks! Guess I'll stick with in-walls.

Would on wall be an option? They don't have to be wall mounted bookshelf speakers, you can get streamlined wallmounts that have a similar profile to a soundbar. Might not be kidproof though.
The right InWall speaker is a bit close to the right corner. This creates boundary reinforcement issues, whereby the right speaker will appear to have more bass than the left speaker. You would most likely have the same problems with a floor standing speaker as well.

Take a look at Revel.

A receiver with good EQ should help with the boundary reinforcement issue as will using a 100hz crossover to a subwoofer.

Thanks for the tip. I'm re-positioning the screen as well, any rule of thumb for how far I should be from the wall?

On-Wall would work. Is that a better way to go, acoustically speaking, all else being equal? Or is that a tough question to answer. Assume a budget of

So, I've done some research, and based on my budget I'm looking at the following:

Definitive Technology RLS II
Axiom M5HP
PSB W-LCR2

Anyone have any feedback on these models? I know the best thing to do is demo them, but I don't think that's realistic for me. So if anyone has experience with any of these speakers that they could share, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Rare to find pro reviews of in walls but I did find this effusive one by a guy who, evidently, has much much more expensive in walls in his actual home.

And lo and behold a review on the PSBs.

Revel makes some of the best and accurate speakers around. I would say go with Revel in walls. Get the nices ones you can afford and you will be a happy camper. Even the entry level revels will make you existing speakers sound horrible.

You could also go with some larger in walls. Something like a Paradigm THX line would work well and get you decent output. Klipsch also has some higher end stuff with good SPL. Really depends on budget and how nice/loud you need them to be. Honestly if you just upgrade your sub/s instead of new speakers youll see a huge improvement.

If it was my setup I would do all revel in walls and 4 subs. If you can do for do as many as you can. If you need small subs SVS makes some nice small sealed ones. For nice small subs on a budget check out RSL's they can come with wireless receivers in them so need need to run RCAs. Two is like $800 or less if you don use the wireless ones and they have an in home trial.

RSL also makes a very affordable in ceiling speaker for atmos $125 each. I cant vouch for them personally but lots people like them.
