Hi, I am looking for suggestions on speaker setup. I have a huge open concept greatroom/dinning room/kitchen (40'x30'). The room isnt really designed to accomodate a 5.1 speaker system (the rear speakers have nowhere to go).

I was wondering what would be the best option. 3.1 system or a soundbar. I guess I could do a 5.1 setup, but the rear speakers wouldnt quite be even or at the back of the room.

Here is a crude drawing of the room setup.

I ran a 3.1 setup for ages. Sounded fine to me.

The rear channels do add something I guess, but they're not critical in my opinion. It depends somewhat on the type of movies you watch, or if you like concert DVDs or multi channel music. I certainly wouldn't let 3.1 stop you though.

Perhaps some in ceiling speakers for rears, if the cathedral ceilings will allow for it.
