I have about $3000 to spend on a 5.1 setup and receiver.

I was looking at the Bose speakers and really like there profile and the way they look. Although I assume most would tell me not to get those.

I was hoping to get some help on choosing some speakers that would be the same form factor as the Bose but getting more bang for the buck.

I'm also looking at getting a new receiver. Some features that I would like (but not necessarily stuck on) would be component upscaling and HDMI upscaling.

I will be using the system for a 50/50 split of gaming, movies and music if that helps.

What I have been looking at is a 5.1 setup from Paradigm and a receiver from Onkyo.

I would appreciate any help anyone has to offer.

I have checked out my local audio specialty store and this is what I have found. The guy really wanted to sell me some speakers from Sinclair and honestly they sounded nice.

SB 2500T

SB 250C

SB 140S

SB 1000W

All of this would run about $1800 cdn.

I also listened to an equivalently priced set of Paradigms which sounded nice as well.

The Sinclairs definitely looked better though. Anyone have any thoughts on this brand of speaker?

I also looked more into receivers and found the Onkyo 804 and the Yamaha V1700. Both look really nice and are about the same price ($1100 cdn). Guy at the store recommended the Yamaha because of it's current throughput.

Can anyone offer me any insight as to what would be the best setup?

With receivers I would look at Yamaha, Denon, and Marantz. The Denon AVR-2807 is a real nice unit. But I'm not saying you have to spend $1000 on a receiver. I would put more of your $3000 budget into speakers. I have never auditioned Sinclairs. But I will recommend the Paradigm Studio series speakers. The Studio 20's would fit your budget the best. You could use Paradigm Mini Monitors for surrounds.
