Speaker wire and banana plugs for my setup?

1125 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  cpu8088
I'm just currious on what I'll need to get my speakers connected to my receiver. Since neither my receiver or speakers are above "low budget," I doubt I'll be needing good speaker wire right?

I'm think 14 gauge from Home Depot for all my speakers except maybe I should buy a high quality speaker wire for my sub? Yes? No? Any recomendations?

So my receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR504 and my speakers are:

Primus 150 - Rear

Primus C25 - Center

Primus 306 - Front towers

Infinity PS12 - Sub

Will I need any banana plugs or extra excessories to get this all connected? Can I just strip the plastic off the ends of the wires and connect everything that way with these speakers?

I connect my speakers straight from the wire....I do however use spades on the AVR side (Easier disconnects and stronger attachments - I am always fiddling with the AV componets....LOL)

And Home Depot 14 gauge should be fine in most applications. No in wall - (need rated wire for that) and not to long of a run.
Banana plugs are nice, but certainly not mandatory if you are careful. I use banana plugs on each end, rear-connect at the AVR and side-connect at the speakers (bookshelves on stands).
Looks like your sub is powered, in which case you probably just want to use a simple RCA cable to connect it to your receiver.
Banana plugs are usefull if you "move" the speaker on a regular basis (such as vacuum the area)...
Thanks everyone :)

I went ahead and ordered spades for the AVR side of things for quick and easy removable if I need to pull out the AVR. I'll connect the wires directly to the speakers since those will not be disconected until I move. I love this forum... so much information and so many active users :)

Good Move - Banana plugs always seems to get loose IMO...spades on the other hand never get loose....like I stated before - I move my AV equipment around sometimes and the spades are perfect with regard to this.... :)
Where do you find reasonably priced spades that will fit typical binding posts - meaing they need to have more than 1/4" and maybe as much as 3/8" clearance while at the same time not be built to only take some humongous speaker cable? I know lots of people recommend places like partsexpress etc..., but whenever I've looked for such spades I've never found them.

Bare wire is fine, though I prefer banana plugs out of convenience.

I would recommend checking Home Depot. I picked up a 100ft spool of RCA-brand 14AWG cable for $30.

This is exactly what I mean. There isn't a single spade in that list that meets the requirements.

I just bought some spades and bananas. The WBTs are expensive, so I decided to go with Viablue. The Viablues are still expensive, but 1/2 the price of WBT. When I ordered they were short one pack of Vias so I got one pack of WBTs instead. Thus I had spades from both companies. Well, the Viablues are very well engineered, and total overkill. The WBTs take it to a whole other level. They are twice the connector of the Viablues. Sometimes you get what you pay for!
hey swamp

the viablues look good.

another good brand is neutrik regarding xlr and rca connectors
