speaker wire help

794 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  wildchild22
I can buy a 500ft roll of 16 gauge in wall speaker wire for 10 dollars. Would running 2 runs to each speaker and twisting the red and white leads at both ends together be the equivalent of 12 gauge wire?

Is there any reason not to do this?

13 gauge actually. So long as the appearance doesn't bother you go for it.

Chu is right. On the other hand, I'd also look at the shielding to see its quality. Most times, with a thinner gauge wire, the shielding isn't as good, particularly if you're running it in-wall.

Still, for 10 spot, that's a good deal.
As far as I know there is no shielding the spool is just marked 16 gauge speaker wire.

here is a pic

Well, if I'm running in-wall, then I'm running CL2/3. I would just choose the right gauge from the get-go but you know, it's a tough economy out there.

If it's in-wall wire, there is usually an entire extra sleeve around the two insulated wires. There is no shielding in most speaker wire.

Agreed!

Wild.....hard to tell from pictures, but that looks like a little heavier gauge lamp cord. Don't know that I would agree that it was originally priced at $100+, but if you have a short enough run, it would probably be OK.

My only issue would be if it's similar to lamp cord, the insulation could be prone to cracking.

I picked up the speaker wire it is 2 16 gauge conductors with a red and white covering in a black sleeve. ( Looks like ethernet cable) . I haven't cut it to length and hooked it up yet but on a side note when I got to the store the sales person told me the price was incorrect. I paid 10.00 for it with free shipping to the store. The spool had the metal ends bent so they said its damaged and sold it to me for 5.00

So 500 ft of in wall approved 16 gauge speaker cable for 5.00 seems like a great deal.

What would the max length I should cut it for my speakers? I am going to double it up so I was told it would be 13 gauge cable.

I want to cut it in the longest lengths possible so when we move and I can reuse it.
