Speakers for COLLEGE apartment???

4513 Views 44 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  afrogt
I was looking to spend less than $800 for a setup

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/vbcla...do=ad&id=10994

I saw these for sale and I was wondering if these would be good for audio mostly for parties. I saw the other party thread but I do not want speakers that will be on the floor because I can see someone falling or getting thrown into them if they are on the floor so I was going more towards speakers that I can mount on shelves OUT OF REACH.

any recomendation for a receiver? would I NEED a sub too? I will probably add one later but not until next summer or if I get a job at school.

will be in a 200 sq. ft living room connected to a 90 sq. ft dining area with no separation between the two.

Most likely will be playing the music through a computer or x-box that we view the music on the tv and would like to be able to use these speakers for our tv too.

800 is not the max I CAN spend but i would like to stay around/below that if possible
when you say $800 for the setup, do you mean $800 for speakers, or $800 for speakers, receiver, what ever source youll be using, etc?

klipsch are very efficeint speakers, meaning theyll give you a lot of sound without requiring a lot of power

what type of music do you plan on playing? if your goign to be playing a lot of rap, youll want a sub. but i would think these would be a decent choice for a nice "party speaker"

just speakers and receiver. I am not too worried about the speaker wire prices and other things and I already have a decent sound card for my laptops and will probably use one of them to play the music. and we have a x-box that i able to play dvds and cds so i think we have that area covered.

it will probably be a decent bit of rap, clasic rock and metal being played but i would rather buy "nice" speakers now and get a nice sub later rather than get "fair" speakers and sub and receiver now.

any other speaker recomendations? and what receiver would you recomend.

thanks!

Up high is better anyhow because then ppl won't be in the way of the sound
. If you get a sub your going to have more noise outside = cops??? Bass travels..... You can definitely do this for less than $800 and have a respectable party system. With only 300 sq ft your not going to have a huge party so two speakers will be enough especially if put over head. Have fun, ah what I would do to be back in college....lol

These might be exactly what you are looking for.

I haven't heard them, but I have heard good things...

Pair them witha good amp and you will be good to go.

luckly for me i go to virginia tech and the cops dont give a **** and you would be suprised how many people fit in these apartments... 25 on the balcony where the keg is 150 in the living room 5 sluts on top of the bar in the dining room 4 guys behind the bar checking out the underwear or lack of underwear on the sluts above 20 in the small kitchen 2 in the fridge trying to steal food+beer and 6 girls in the bathroom because god forbid you take a piss by yourself.

but i am still at a loss for what receiver to get to impress the sluts on my bar.

Harman Kardon makes good stuff and cheap direct from Harman on ebay. The specs may look worse than others, but they are honest and conservative in their ratings.

I would also look into Infinity Beta 40s. Great floorstanding and bass.

If you are looking to go huge...go infinity beta 50s...

You can blow the clothes right off the girls if they stand in front of those if they are powered properly...and you probably wont need a sub for a while

I would pair the Beta 50s with a B&K (305/307) receiver ~400-600shipped. they need the extra power

If you go with bookshelf. HArmanKardon will do

Harman setup w/bookshelf ~ 600

B&K setup w/floorstanding ~800-1100

Side note...if you are throwing parties and people see some serious speakers...be prepared to get them stolen/broken.

though the 50s weigh 62lb and the B&K amp is 65lb...lol

also...the 50s have great grills which protect them very well against being touched/poked/hit...just not against spilled beverages.

I wouldn't get anything as nice as Infinity Beta 40/50. People will put their drinks on top of your speakers, possibly poke holes in the grilles. I remember college and nobody cares about your personal possessions.

I think you're doing it right by mounting some speakers out of the way. Try to find some nice used JBL S38's if you can.

I would have to agree with you...

however, in his defense there is a big difference between the respectable women/girls you meet wherever, and the type of girls I see around which he has obviously seen as well.

Thought I would still respect them enough to refer to them as women. I can understand where he gets the term.

Their actions classify them as such and address another serious issues on their end...

Never went to college brother? I went to college @ University of Utah and even in Mormonville there was PLENTY of "loose" girls there all the time. Then there was the slutty ones that you and 2 more of your friends get to pass around like a joint. Is it right NO but does it happen? All the time. I think it came from a generation of parents that did not talk about sex with there kids only said how bad it was and that god doesn't like it (WTF) If more parents are open with there kids when they go to college its not girls gone wild. However if you shelter them there whole life BAMM college party girl (slut) she becomes.

I'm just being honest

I went to college.....lol. I graduated in 2000. I have seen my fair share.

Anyhow not trying to get on anyones case, I just think the forums are here for polite advice and didn't think there was a place for the term. I am not by far an innocent college graduate and I indulged in many extra curricular activities while in college.

I would put my money on the library.
If you're getting a system for crazy college parties with several hundred drunk clowns, skip the audiophile setup. There are speakers designed specifically for this task, like Cerwin Veags , then get a nice HK receiver that will put out more then its rated power.

i don't only want them for parties. I will listen to them by myself and with my roommates or a few friends way more often then we will be having parties. but i want them on shelves high up for the instances when we do have parties. so i am looking for a middle ground where they sound "good" (for my price range) but are able to get loud enough for the parties we do have that will range in 50-150 maybe 200 people
i cna actually give a +1 for the cerwin vegas. they are not going to be the absolute best sound quality out there, but a friend of mine had a set back in the day and they seemsed nearly bullet proof. and back then we were probably the worst thing besides college kids, middle schoolers
