I have a rega rp1 hooked to the phono preamp on a rogue integrated. Whenever I stop the turntable, I get a loud popping noise in the speakers. It's pretty annoying, but I'd also like to make sure I'm not doing anything detrimental to my system. It is completely silent on start up.

Am I making a rookie mistake?

It isn't likely to hurt anything. To avoid it, turn the amp off first and wait a few seconds before turning off the turntable.

I guess I'd wonder why it happens and which part of the audio chain is suspect:

1) turntable

2) phono pre-amp

3) integrated amp

4) connections

It really shouldn't occur IMO. I never have to power off or lower the volume on my amp just to change an LP.

It is probably just a mechanical noise picked up by the cartridge. Turn off the amplifier first.

Still a problem that shouldn't occur IMO.

I hooked up an external phono preamp and I don't get the noise anymore. So much for my "stripped down" system.

Granted, I'm sure the external is "better" than the internal one in the rogue, but one of the reasons I bought the rogue was the preamp was well regarded.
