I'm looking for floor-standing speakers with a very thin footprint for the tight space around my TV. The Canton CD 100's ( www.cantonusa.com ) would be perfect (

Well,... you could look at Def Tech Mythos, and RBH AC series. These are similar to the Canton's, I have not looked at prices but I'd bet it they are well over $500. Other than that Sony, Panasonic et al: make very slim towers,... just don't expect them to sound anything like the aforementioned speakers
