Speakers suggestion

844 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Huskymaniac
Hi,

I'm planning on purchasing an 46" LCD soon (Sony or Sharp) and want to add stylish speakers to the set.

I have a small (ish) room and not looking to rock the house. I can't install surround sound for many reasons. So I'm just looking for self powered front speakers that will give me better sound than the LCD TV speakers.

Is there such thing? Or should I just buy one of them stylish HTIB (300-400) and just use the front speakers?

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Though they are currently out-of-stock at newegg.com, but SWAN M200 Studio Monitors seem to be quite good. Per info on the website, they are likely to be in stock later this month.

Thanks for the reply.

Are there other models in that Price range that are floor standing with that SLEEK FLAT look?

They don't look like powered speakers, I thought you were looking for powered speakers.
Yes, they are not powered speakers. I really like the way they look and was wondering if there are any powered speakers with this type of look.

Did a google search and found that this link has some more powered speakers in various prices ranges.

You will most likely need to look into active studio type monitors like these:

The Swans mentioned above, won't have the power to give you what you want I wouldn't think.

I have never seen fully active (powered) towers like the Yamaha towers in your link.

I would like to hear comments from any owners of the Infinity TSS-750 speaker system. Thank you.
In retrospect.... instead of trying to do "powered" towers.... Why not buy a decent budget HT receiver, hook up your LCD, DVD player, Game Box and whatever else you have and then buy the speakers that you like and want?

You will have the processor in the receiver that will most likely have a "phantom" center setting and you would have pretty decent sound on a budget across the front. You would also be in a position to easily upgrade to more speakers later on if you wanted to.

That makes a LOT more sense to me.

Thanks. I was trying to avoid the receiver if possible. But here is a question, Can I hook up all my video components (DVD,game, HD DVR) directly to the LCD TV and then just connect the digital audio out from the TV to the receiver?

Can this be done?

Thanks

If you are considering receiver anyway, why do you want to connect the components wrong way?

Just connect the components and speakers to the receiver and then tv to the receiver.
Thanks. The reason I was trying to avoind the reciver is that I wanted to connect the HD DVR and DVD to the TV via HDMI.

That's a good enough reason, but unless the TVs you are going to buy have some sort of digital audio out, you will be limited to stereo audio as output from the TV. Back to your question about connecting TV audio out to receiver, yes it should be possible. Any stereo receiver should be able to handle it.

An alternative can be to go for a reasonably priced receiver with HDMI switching. Perhaps a used one, because the receivers with HDMI switching are not inexpensive.
ASX, thanks for the reply again. Yes both TV that I'm looking at have the digital audio out.

So will it be fine to connect the digital audio out to the receiver then?

I looked at the HDMI switching receivers before but they are a bit expensive for what I'm trying to do right now with my small room.

I have them and like them. They are a major upgrade from what I have and a great value in the price range. We are a single income home with two kids in private school so I have to look for good values in reasonable price ranges and I think these are the best speakers in their price range. The also have gotten great reviews in the audio magazines. I am no audiophile but the pros seem to think that they sound as good as speakers priced over $1000.
