Hi All,

The folks over at the HTiB board convinced me the best option is to put a bit of extra effort in and get my own components, so here I am...

I'm a relative newb wrt sound, but just mounted a 65" LG OLED B8 in my master (about 15x15 room), and thinking of investing in something a bit nicer than the TV speakers. My only content for the most past is through a Fire TV Stick HD, so I think the easiest method is to just connect to HDMI ARC.

I'm thinking of getting one of the lower level to mid-level Onkyo receivers (seems TX-NR686 is well regarded and a bit "future proof"), but now I need some speakers. Again, the HTiB folks pointed me here. I'm trying to get something for around/less than $1,000, and it looks like I'll put in 300-400 on the receiver.

Does anyone have recommendations for the speakers/sub that traditionally work well with these receivers?

Thanks much!

How many speakers? Do you want a subwoofer also?

Why not plug the Firestick HD directly into the new AVR? No point using ARC if you don't have to.
Shows you how much I know about this...so what, Firestick HD into receiver, receiver HDMI out to the TV?

Yeah, was thinking a sub and 5 speakers (typical 5.1 I guess), since everyone killed me for the soundbar idea :)

That receiver is more powerful than mine so you'll have zero issues with most of the recommendations you will receive.

Be aware than unlike HTIB subwoofers the much much better subwoofers you buy can be very large.

Those listed below are about the smallest and least expensive good quality subs you want to look at.

PORTED SUBWOOFERS $455 AND BELOW, DELIVERED

NOTE:
*THE LARGER PORTED SUBS DELIVER AT LEAST 40% MORE SOUND PRESSURE LEVEL
THAN THE SAME BRAND'S SEALED VERSION WITH SAME SIZE WOOFER AND AMP
*IF LOOKING AT LARGER/MORE EXPENSIVE SUBWOOFERS ADD PSA TO THE LIST OF BRANDS
*IF YOU ARE NOT AN ACTION MOVIE FAN A SUBWOOFER WITH 22-30HZ EXTENSION WOULD BE FINE
*FOR MUSIC A 30HZ SUB IS A FINE CHOICE
*BEFORE BUYING MAKE A CARDBOARD CUTOUT OF THE SIZE OF THE SUB TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT TOO LARGE FOR YOU
Specs are from the manufacturer unless noted otherwise.
Warranty
for AMP

2 years 350watts =15w16h17d= 40 lbs 10" [30hz] $399 RSL SPEEDWOOFER 10S, (extension from Sound & Vision review)

2 years 250watts =15w19h17d= 42 lbs 10" [25hz] $455 HSU VTF 1 MK3 (extension from Audioholics review)

My suggestion for you as it offers free returns, even with the sub, is to buy this 3.1 system.

A very competent system that would put any HTIB to shame.

And if you disagree no problem, simply return it for free.

To stay within budget buy these at Best Buy to use as your rear speakers.

For speaker wire, HDMI cables, look at Monoprice.

Yes.

5.1.0 is a standard surround system.

The first number refers to the number of ear level speakers, the second to the number of subs and the third to the number of Atmos speakers, (usually in ceiling).

Like this set-up, as I've seen a few reviews on these Emotiva speakers and Dayton's as well.

Couple more questions - I live in an attached row house in DC. Is it worth it to invest in something this nice if I can't really utilize the power (due to neighborly considerations)? That's why I was initially just thinking soundbar/small HTIB, since I'm not going to be rocking out or risk the cops being called during my next Bond screening...

I'll have to run wire around the room to the satellite speakers on the floorboard. I read something about the type of speaker wire needed for the distance/ohm requirement...If this Dayton's are 6 ohms, say a max of 30 ft run to get it from one wall to the opposite corner...any specific wire needed?

Appreciate all the advice from everyone here.
