Hi everyone. I'm setting up a new theater and I need you opinions on a surround sound system. I've put in some very good homework on the front mains in going with the PSB Golds (I can tell you, when I closed my eyes I thought I had front row center tickets to a live performance - TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!) They do not have a built in sub but when you hear them you do not want to do any complaining. My question now is centers rear effects. I'm going with the new Yamaha RXV1 reciever so the setup will be:

Front Main - PSB Golds

Center for front and back - ?

Front Yamaha DSP effects (2)inwall - ?

Rear effects - ?

I have been persuaded to check out:

2 x Klipsch RC3 Centers

2 x Klipsch RS3 3 driver Rear effects

1 x Klipsch KSW 15 Sub

My questions are, which is the most commonly raved effect - sub - effect speakers. For effects purposes, do the Bipoles rule - Dipoles "or" no poles!

Need your advice

Cheers

Any reason why you're not getting PSB speakers all around? It's generally better to get all your speakers from the same manufacturer (timbre matching, etc.). They should at least be the same type of speakers (Klipsch uses horns, PSB does not). Your center should definately be PSB... that is critical for timbre matching across your soundstage.

As for the 'pole' issue, the most raved about speakers are the ones that can switch between those two modes. (like the Aerial surrounds). However, this would be overkill for your current system. I believe that conventional wisdom dictates dipole for HT and bipole or direct for 5ch music. Of course, everyone has their own opinion... listen and decide for yourself.

Your subwoofer and center channel speaker are very important for HT. If you can't afford a high quality sub or center, then wait and save until you can... you'll thank yourself later! A cheap speaker will ruin the good sound that you're getting from your PSB Golds. I'd get the PSB C6 center (to match your mains) and look at high quality subwoofers (Paradigm, Hsu, and Velodyne are some good companies to get you started on your search).

Hope this helps!

Thanks Greg, you helped a lot. Your exactly right. I think I might stick with the same speakers all around. As for the sub, I'm going to take a look at the ones you mentioned.

Thank-You for your assistance Greg!

Lee,

In a recent issue of Home Theater Mag., they tried different speakers for surround EX. They concluded that using dipoles to the sides and a pair of dipoles or directs for the rears were best. Regardless of whether you use two centers or one, I would definitely recommend matching all rear channel speakers. Most of your pans will be from one rear speaker to another, not front to back. For subs, the suggestions before were right on. You might also want to look at vmps ( www.vmpsaudio.com ) and ACI ( www.audioc.com ).
