Speed of the NXE Dashboard?

1443 Views 28 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  formulanerd
I'm starting to wonder if something is wrong with my 360 given the extreme sluggishness of my dashboard...and I'm curious how fast it is for others.

For example, if I boot up and go to play BF1943 by going to My Xbox, then game library and hit 'A'...it will take anywhere from 20-30 seconds for it to come up. Even worse, when I hit the guide button from either in-game or from the dashboard and go to my friends list....it'll take another 20-40 seconds for it to load...it just sits there locked and I can't navigate anything. Same is true for messages. Granted, I have a rather large friends list at 98 people...but these load times just seem excessive.

I know that Major Nelson has mentioned the next NXE update will be about speeding up the experience, so I've always kind of assumed that mine was working as intended. Is this pretty standard for you experience with the NXE?

I don't have a problem with mine, but I keep my HDD cleaned up the best I can (delete unneeded videos, only keep current trials and games I'm playing, etc).

Might want to go to the "manage your hard drive" (or whatever it's called) and see if you're running out of space. Just a thought that might be causing issues.
It doesn't take me long to navigate through various parts of the dashboard. I don't see any delays when I start a game. I do copy all my current games to the HDD, but I don't remeber a delay the few times I've played games via the disc.

Thing do bog down when I'm trying to do stuff like send/read messages or join/leave a party during a game.
Remember the first dashboard was sped up twice through updates. Hopefully the same happens for NXE...
something is wrong with stang's setup.... i've seen this once before, but the kid was running nXe off of the memory card, and everything else off of the hard drive that he bought later (guess he didnt want to d/l nxe again)

stangs, what size hard drive do you have? and how much free space?
It's about a 3 year old Elite with a 120gb hard drive. I've got around 14gb free.

The actual games seem to load at a fine speed...it's really the NXE that is sooo slugish.
The NXE is terribly slow. I do everything through the quick launch and the blades. Much faster. It can take over 7 mins for all my friends gayvatars to appear on my friends list just so I can see who is online. Whats the point of having that if it takes so damn long! Quicker to just use the blades to go to your friends list.

if you want do to an experiment, clear out 2-3 games you have "installed" then clear the cache and reboot the box. tell me if it feels like a different machine.
I am having the same exact experience as Stang. I have about 30 GB free and have around four games installed. Could it really be the games causing this?

hmm, maybe you should qualify your statement by saying The NXE is terribly slow for me.

The NXE dash on both of my 360s is very fast. The only time it ever gets slow is when I come out of Live game and it waits for the recently played games to repopulate.

Did you ever hack a non official hard drive to your box like you said you wanted to do? If you did, maybe that could be one of your problems

gayvatars?

NXE has speed and responsive issues. Not sure exactly why, but many people I have read who have the issue have very filled up hard drives. This is a pretty well known issue so there's no point to dismissing it. According to Major Nelson, it is something they are addressing with the next system update.

with 30 gb free i dont think that could be an issue.

i have a 60gb, and get some slowdown when i have 15gb or less free.... but as of now i have somewhere around 24gb, and everything is extremely fast.
In the past month I've used my XBL gamertag profile ran from a memory card on:

1) my ex's Arcade

2) my Elite

3) my current roommates Pro

4) my other friends Pro (that I recently upgraded to NXE using a cell phone connection).

No problems with speed or any other issues with the NXE on any of those 4 systems.

As someone else said.. cleanup your harddrive and reinstall any games to the HDD.. and see if that gets things back to normal.

Yes I did. Its so easy its shocking! I have 3 120 gb now and my original 20. But it doesnt matter what hard drive I use its the same slowness. I have a launch 360 maybe that has something to do with it? Does anyone have a newer 360 that is slow?
I had this same issue. Clear the cache and it'll regain quite a bit of speed.

i have an elite and also have this issue. I've cleared the cache several times and it will solve the problem for about a week or two, then it slows back down again.
Thanks for all the input guys.

I decided to clean out my hard drive in hopes of speeding it up. I was shocked to see how much crap I had on there! I had over 30gb of Game demos and unplayed arcade titles and 40gb of Videos...
. I removed the vast majority of that crap (cloning clyde, anyone? Simpsons demo?) but did NOT cleared the cache yet, and the speed is MUCH better. I now have ~80gb of free space up from ~14gb.

Now...I don't think the speedup is a size issue as 14gb of free space should be plenty...rather, it was likely the quantity of crap I had on my hard drive. I'm assuming that my slowdowns were likely related to the time it took to populate a list of all my game titles, videos, etc. By cutting down on the number of items, you reduce the work your 360 has to do in generating an up to date list.

I may go ahead and clear my cache anyways to see if that speeds it up more...I'll let you know if I do. In the meantime, thanks for the tips and help!

yo veear, what do you drive? you on vortex??
If you have a lot of friends and a lot of content, it's going to be slow. Bear in mind that the Xbox 360 has to download a crapload of data concerning what your friends are currently doing, how their avatars are dressed, etc. Plus, it likes to download screen shots and information about "downloads related to content you already own", etc., and it tends to do this even if you aren't actively looking to buy anything new.

I do find it very irritating myself, but it's just sort of the design of their system now.
Anybody who has NXE speed issues, do you have a lot of messages in your Inbox? Try deleting them if so. I have one friend who had dozens and dozens of received messages and his XBox 360 was slow with NXE. He told me one day he was reading old messages and started deleting them. When he was done he found his dashboard was full speed, all the time, he has kept deleting new messages as they arrive and not had recurring speed problems. Might be worth a try if your dashboard is slow and you find you have a lot of old messages.
