i've been reading that ez set doesn't work well and it's better to use an spl meter to calibrate. other than measuring output right at the speakers, how exactly do i use it to calibrate the speakers from a listening position. (i don't have one yet so are there instructions that come with it?) does it emit a test tone like ez set? your help is appreciated, THANKS

Get the Avia cal disk, it will explain it all, even with pictures and test tones. They recommend the analog over the digital meter. JR

thanks JR- is it sold thru B&Ms, like @ CC or BB? what about radio shack, i've read several references to their spl?

You can buy one at Radio Shack. I heard they discontinued the analog version, but even if that is true, they'll have the digital one for sure and it will work.

EZ set on my HK7200 was wildly innaccurate in my setup. The spl meter on my HK remote wasn't much help either, I could actually hear changes being made that the remote never picked up. I do use Avia myself for complete setup including powered sub.


You don't need to have Avia to get a better adjustment than EZset. Simply

adjust your 7 channels to the same levels with your test tones on your receiver with an SPL meter. I found this much more balanced than EZset gave me, then when I had time to run all tracks of Avia, I got a truly accurate system balance.

...whats different about the new model.....


I have an older typer RS analog meter.


The only thing different that I can tell is the shape/design of it is a

little different. The selector knob looks different. But it seems performance

wise to be the same parameters on the knob and meter.


I'm glad I got mine, my 5.1 speaker levels were off just using my hearing

as a guide. I have the same 4 speakers for L/R fronts and surrounds,

but the levels were different using the meter because of my seating

position and my surrounds are up higher than my mains. also my center

is a higher efficiency Cerwin Vega and using the meter I had to back down

on the level more than original.


It has made a positive improvement for my system, I enjoy it more!


Now I play with it to see what concert level sounds like it my home

+100 to 110db. TOO LOUD.
