Splitting D* HD signal???

362 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  greywolf
Guys, I'm looking for some insight into how you're splitting your HD signal throughout your houses.

I've got my main 57" HDTV hooked up with DirecTV. I get their HD and HD locals (CBS, NBC, and FOX). If it get the HD Tivo, I'm going to need another run to that receiver, correct? That's fine because there's four seperate outputs off of the dish. But that only leaves me with two other outputs, and more than two TV's in the house. I called a couple of places around my house, and they said to use the Terk 5x8 multi switcher.

So I picked on up yesterday, put the four lines into it, then plugged in the TV. While I got HD, I wasn't getting my locals anymore... If I plug it directly into the dish, they come up fine...

So what am I missing? I'd rather return the Terk switcher, just for the fact that I haven't had much luck with their stuff. Is there somthing out there that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Was it the Terk BMS 58 cascadable switch? That's one of the recommended models.

I believe so. It had four inputs on top for satellite, and one for an antenna...
Tune to channels 490-494. Each should have a banner declaring the satellite and transponder set it reaches. If any of the channels shows anything else, report it here.

A wiring diagram for the switch is at the bottom of http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_disp...p?PROD=SPBMS58
It sounds like you just inserted the multiswitch into your single cable run between your dish (4 outputs on the LNB, phase III type) and receiver? That won't work with more than one reciever hooked up (and may be causing you problems now if your locals are on 119), you need to run all four cables from the dish to the top of the multiswitch.

Also, the HDTivo (or any other DTivo) will need 2 cables for dual tuner functionality (which is really really nice).
That's the splitter that I got this weekend.

I've got it hooked up exactly like the diagram shows (all four cables), just no antenna. I was referring to the HD locals on channels 80 and 82. They didn't come in and some odd ones on the Sunday Ticket didn't come in properly. It says, searching for signal. But other ones did. Really odd. But straight dish to receiver worked fine. HD locals, and Sunday Ticket..

Looking back at the diagram, the only thing I'm not sure of is whether I have the Sat A/B ones into the proper inputs on the top of the switch. We had the dish installed and they ran the lines directly to lines in our basement. Could it be that I have somes of the inputs in the wrong spot, allowing it to sort of work?
It's a good idea to refer to the device as a multiswitch, not a splitter. A splitter is a different device entirely. If you have a Phase III dish, order doesn't matter. If you have a Phase II that doesn't have a built in multiswitch order is very important. The test channels are the best way to check if your hardware is properly set up. A miswired setup can definitely work for some channels and not for others.

Sorry about that. Still getting over the shock that my wife agreed to a new TV...

When plugged into the multiswitch, Test 1 fails, Searching for satellite signal, all the other ones pass. So one of my feeds off of the dish is dead? Or something else. When my receiver is plugged directly into the dish, all the tests pass fine.

Thanks for all of the help guys.
There is most likely a problem with the cable attached to the 13V Sat A terminal of the multiswitch if Test 1 fails.
