I have never bought an extended warranty on an item, but see mention in here of Square Trade so thought I would ask why others buy it and how it has worked?

In my mind these extended warranties are a bet by someone there will not be an issue, but maybe I am wrong?

That is correct, or at the very least it's how I see it. That being said,

I have a squaretrade warranty on pretty much every piece of electronics I own that cost me more than $50. But then again I have a 3.5 yr old and the first time my Harmony One ends up in a cup of milk, it'll be worth it. Or said cup or milk then spills all over several controllers, etc.

I've not had to make a claim on them yet, so can't attest to how they hold up to their end of the deal but ultimately, if you don't have any risk you don't need any insurance.

Another instance where a Square Trade purchase makes sense is when buying from an unauthorized reseller (eg. ebay) as many mfr's will not honor their 1-3 year warranty unless purchased from an authorized reseller.

Edit: I see that a couple others already responded in your original Pioneer thread ... did you read them as this thread is redundant?

Yeah, I detailed my recent ST experience in that thread. In summary, it went flawlessly and was worth every penny I paid for the ST warranty...
