Squeal/Chirp from svs 16/46PC+...help ID?

Just got my used svs 16-46pc+...when watching the opening scene of SW:RotS, and the race scene in SW:TPM, every now and then I get a loud chirp. I thought bottoming out was a "thwack" sound...this sounds more like someone with basketball shoes cutting on a BBcourt.

Also have a problem with a grill rattle at high volumes, I can push down on the grill with my hand and the sub sounds great. The sub is from 2003, so it's a little older.

Any ideas on the chirp?

edit--duhhh some details---all ports open, SS at 16hz, gain at 4/10 or 5/10. Tile floor.

I'd bet what you're hearing is an amp leak. There is a gasket underneath the edge of the amp where it attaches to the side of the cylinder. If that gasket is failing, or if a screw has worked loose over time, the air escaping through the crack can sound like when you blow up a balloon and pull the neck tight as it deflates.

I'd take a shot at tightening each of the screws around the edge of the amp plate. You'll need a square headed screwdriver. Don't overtighten, or you could strip the wood.

As to the grill rattle, I'd give SVS a call and just get a new grill.

Tim
Yeah I got an email from SVS about the grill, I think it just needs some new foam. I popped off the grill but its 10:30 PM and I live in an apt. building that flipped to condos, I don't think the neighbors would appreciate a test now, lol.

I was thinking that the squeal sound like it was coming from the amp plate, so that makes sense. I'll give that a shot too

thanks
Could be a blown driver also. If you have it, play Dire Straits "Money for nothing" at a reasonably high level. The bass drum hit will give a "squeak / chirp" with a bad driver.

If you can get to the driver, push in mildly on the center. It should be smooth in, and out.

Good luck
The driver moves in and out fine.. I should clarify...the sub hits pretty loud volumes, its just during at certain times as an effect grows louder and goes deeper, it suddenly "squeaks".. like opening scene of SW RotS, flying by a large ship, the rumble is deep, room is shaking, then when an explosion is added in, it chirps. I wonder if extremely low freqs and pressure e are pushing air out the amp seal. I will be calibrating is either this weekend or early next week.

Does anyone know what size driver is needed to tighten the amp screws?

edit-the grill rattle is now a tube rattle..lol..I removed the grill and put in Armin Van Bureens "A state of trance", and the bass thump rattle was still there...I pushed down on the entire sub and it stopped. I'm on the bottom floor of a condo, with ceramic tile floors, whats a good item to use under the sub? Just an area rug? I was thinking maybe that really heavy 20lb. commercial carpet pad as well.

Get a bunch of those 3M half-round compliant rubber stick-on feet from SVS and place several of these around the bottom perimeter of the baseplate. It won't rattle against the tile anymore, and it will not wander around either. My 20-39PC+ did the same thing.

Happened to my SVS PC 25-31.

Loose screws fixed in a couple of minutes.

Turned grill 1/3 and problem solved.
