Squeezebox Classic vs Squeezebox duet receiver + iphone control

The Squeezebox duet is a bit out of my prince range although I really like what I have read about it. My question is, will I be better off just buying the Squeezebox duet receiver and using my iphone + app as the remote or is the interface just not so good? Or does it make more sense to get the Squeezebox Classic and use iphone as my remote? If choose to get the classic, can I add the duet remote later?

Or should I just man up and get the Duet + Remote and be done with it? If I

I'd advise you get the SB Classic and pickup the iphone app. Then you can use both the iphone and the IR remote to comtrol the SB. It is possible to buy just the Duet receiver but you must use a free third party app for the initial configuration. Duets just seem to be a bit more flakey in some implementations, the Classic should be rock solid.

Only thing is the Duet receiver is much cheaper than the classic package. Any way to just purchase the classic receiver?

I don't mind having to do some work to get the duet receiver set up if that is the path I choose

You can purchase the Duet receiver standalone, can configure with the utility, and use the iphone app or the web interface to control the receiver. The Classic has a display and an IR remote included, and costs more than just the Duet receiver.

If I were to just purchase the classic receiver without the remote, would I be facing any limitations?

The classic is a package deal, can't be split up unless you somehow found one used without the remote. I'm pretty sure you need a remote (IR), to configure a Classic.

Thanks for the help Iceman.
I take it that you have considered two main points of difference.

Classic has its own display, Duet receiver does not (which is why the receiver is cheaper).

If you are in the same room as the Squeezebox and not too far from it, the infra-red remote together with the display on the SB provides satisfactory navigation.

And, of course, the Duet remote is one more thing to go wrong, compared with the basic remote of the Classic.

I think Iceman is wrong in saying that you need the remote to configure the Classic (though you may to upgrade firmware), but he is right in saying that the remote comes with it.

You need it to connect to a server for the first time, too.

You need the remote for wireless setup, password, etc, unless you can do this with the network utility. I consider that "configuration".
I decided to purchase the classic + remote. Found a good deal on ebay that was just a tad higher than a duet receiver by itself.

What is the iphone app that I should use with the classic?

Thanks for the help

There's three. I'd recommend iPeng (obviously, I wrote it, so you might want to get a second opinion), you can learn more about it at

Thanks man
I'd also recommend iPeng -- and I didn't write it.

It makes a great combo with my old Squeezebox 2 (an older "classic" model).
