I'd say a table itself is stable since it's sitting on the floor. A few friends that went through the big Northridge quake had their TV (tube) topple forward onto the floor but the table they were sitting on stayed put. All my TVs stayed put on every quake we've had (starting with the '71 Sylmar quake) and the biggest one i went through was that Northridge quake. My house shook so hard almost everything got tossed out of my kitchen cabinets, pictures fell off the walls, all the drawers in my bedroom dressers came open, table lamps toppled onto the floor, but my front-heavy 27" Sony Trinitron tube TV kinda "walked" toward the front edge of the table yet it did not fall over.
Later i got a bigger 32" HD-Tube TV and i tried to tip it forward to see how stable it is and despite it weighing 180 lbs it was fairly easy to tip. I checked this more than a few times during the two years i had it. Then when i got my 42" plasma i was concerned that it would topple much easier but i was surprised to discover that it was *much* harder to tip forward than the tube TV was, even though it weighs half as much. When i tip it forward the whole duckfoot base lifts off the table with the front edge of the feet fighting the tendency to tip forward so it turns out that my plasma is actually more tip-resistant than my tube TVs were.
Regardless, i've attached the two little base tether straps to the table top just in case a really really big earthquake hits.

With a wide skinny panel sitting on top of a stand I am wondering if the first decent earthquake we have it will go splat. Mounting it on a wall is not really an option. Appreciate any feedback from people who might have an appropriate stand. |
