Stand Alone HD-DVR

841 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mrmike
I have been looking for a stand-alone HD DVR. I know that Tivo just came out with their series 3, but since I use satellite that is of no use to me. Does anyone know of a HD DVR solution that isn't an already integrated unit? Thanks.

There isn't anything in the consumer realm that would take a generic HD output from a STB like your sat tuner and store it off. The technical reasons for this have been hashed out ad infinitum here on the forums. You'll either need to get a DVR from your sat provider or use one of the alternatives that mods your STB (like http://www.nextcomwireless.com/R5000/home.htm )

Sony made one, you can find it on pricegrabber.com under DVRs. Unfortunately I think it's off the market now, so you may have to buy a second-hand one.

Edit: it's the DHG-HDD250, there is even a thread on this forum for it!

That's an OTA/Cable DVR, it wouldn't interface with an STB from a sat provider.
