stand-alone plate amps

519 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  M NEWMAN
i have a SVS passive cylinder sub and am now looking at amp options. my separate amplifier used to power it in the home theater but it was replaced by a Velodyne powered sub. now i wish to use the SVS again on another room but don't like to spend too much for a new amp. i'm particularly interested in the plate amps from Parts Express. are they safe as stand-alones or is there an enclosure you can buy? thanks for any tips/info.

i've been looking at pro amps too but they're still around $300...

There are many smaller home amps which are bridgeable, available on eBay for under 200$...Hafler200 series, Audiosource amp1, and the like. These would be superior to most plate amps in the same Price bracket.
The Parts Express 240W amp has a rear enclosure, that should work fine.
Stand alone amps with features like a typical plate amp (high level input, xover, etc) are available from RBH and Truaudio. I think there's a couple of others too. Otherwise, if you're just coming out of an LFE sub output of an A/V receiver, then just get an inexpensive pro amp (Crown XLS series, or maybe QSC).
