standard def upconversion quesion

i've read that if your HDTV recieves its signal via a HDMI cable from your cable box the standard def upconversion happens in the cable box, not in the TV itself. that would suggest that a the quality of standard def upconversion is irrelevant if you plan to use the HDMI port for cable input. is this correct?

if so, is the standard def upconversion from cable box better than the upconversion of most HDTVs?

the reason i ask is that i found a tv i like, but the upconversion sucks on it, and i want to know if this is a non-issue if i use an HDMI cable.

Where the upconversion takes place depends on the output options of the cable box. Some allow you to pass the signal through untouched, others upconvert it to whatever the output resolution is you set the box to.

As for the upconversion, most likely the TV will do a better job, I suggest you try both if it's an option and decide for yourself.
