I did some searching but could not find this solution. Here is my set up:

Sony bravia KDL-52XBR4

Onkyo TX-NR807

DirecTV Hr21 DVR

I am trying to figure out how to make standard definition channels (4:3) appear widescreen (16:9) on my television. There are settings in the TV and the Receiver to do this manually by selecting "zoom"...so when i tune into a SD channel I can manually select settings to make it widescreen but nothing that will do it automaticaly. Does anyone know of a way to do this automaticaly with my existing equipment?

Thanks,

Jimmie

I agree with cavu that you should watch everything in its native aspect ratio. Any zooming or stretching of an image will necessarily either cut off a substantial portion of the picture, and/or distort the picture making people/objects look abnormal. It drives me nuts to see a picture stretched just to fill in the whole screen. Would you turn your radio up all the way just because you can? No, you'd set it to the proper volume for your ears, and to hear things more properly reproduced like it would sound in the real world. The same thing can apply to the picture on a TV.

But, to answer your question, to do it automatically with your setup, you need to change the settings in the DirecTV Receiver itself. Hit "menu" on the satellite remote, go to setup, choose "HDTV", and you should see an aspect menu. You can choose "normal", "wide", etc. (or something similar, I can't remember exactly offhand). Then you need to set the TV aspect to either "full" or "dot by dot" (not sure what Sony calls 1080i/p without overscan), and set the receiver to "through" or "source". Try out the different aspect ratios on the satellite receiver, and see which you prefer.
