Support Digital Cinema

Star Wars Episode II opens in over 60 DLP Theaters across America May 16th.

Since it was originated in 24p and having recently seen the HD quality of

of the images projected digitally , I highly recommend that you visit the closest DLP Cinema to enjoy the movie. Perfect every showing.

This event will change how we will want to watch movies forever.....

If there is no DLP Cinema in your area, complain to Theater Management.

Today was the day that the tickets were to go on sale at the theater in Orlando (the only one in Florida that was supposed to have SW2 in digital). I called them up to buy my tickets this morning, and they informed me that they may not have it after all, because they are in a dispute with Lucas. The contract from Lucas says that they must have the picture digitally for an 8 week run, but Lilo & Stitch opens on June 21st, so they won't agree to that.

Lilo & Stitch

Disney's summer animated offering about a girl who adopts a mutant from outer space. It looks good and is available in digital format.

Lucas' problem is that after five weeks of release, while it will probably still be bringing in crowds, Lilo & Stitch is likely to be a bigger draw. To eliminate a digital presentation (which he ostensibly prefers) completely because they only want to carry it for five weeks defeats his logic. He's getting greedy, something his movies preach against.

Notably, The Phantom Menace, financially, the third highest grossing movie of all time, in its sixth, seventh and eighth weeks domestically earned:

6: $23,597,000

7: $21,497,000

8: $12,018,000

for a total of $57,112,000 for the three weeks in question. This represented, in 37.5% of the time released, less than 15% of the film's gross to that point.

Lucas claims that he wants to see the advancement of digital cinema. He shouldn't tie the hands of his allies.

Leo and Stich isn't going to bring in the digital cinema crowd.

I hope the 35mm prints of EPII are better than Spider-man, it sucked. I've seen better DVDs on my projector.

I would love to see it that way, but according to the map I would have to drive to Olathe Kansas, or Peoria Arizona to do that since there are not any in the Denver area. Since we don't have any full power OTA HDTV stations either (and won't for another couple of years), I guess this should not come as a surprise. Now as much as I would like to see the movie in this format, there is no movie that is worth driving that far to see. Maybe someone who sees the movie in both formats can report back if they are able to see the difference.

JM,

I wouldn't waste your time. I saw digital projection in Olathe and I wasn't impressed.

I could see pixels from half way back in the theatre.

IMO a good film print beats digital everytime.

Just ask Steven Spielberg or Roger Ebert.

I don't know what all the fuss is about digital projection IMO it is not ready for prime time.

Randall;

Thanks very much for the link; I've just checked and I'm in the fortunate position of having a DLP theater just a couple of miles from me. Looking forward to checking this out.

I'm going too. There're several theaters close to me. BTW Kevin, I saw Episode I digitally and was very impressed as was the rest of the sell-out, techno savvy crowd. Perhaps the theater you saw it in had a different, lower res pj?

I'm quite fortunate in that the Peoria complex is my favorite in town (DLP, stadium seating with rocking chairs, $1 refills on soda and a free popcorn for wearing their t-shirt).

As for the difference, while the resolution is not noticably different, three main factors are clearly visible (these are based on my viewings of Spy Kids last year).

1. The picture is uniformly brighter. Apparently, the process of viewing light as shown through a filter (film) reduces the overall brightness.

2. The picture does not jiggle. While watching a movie, you don't think about it much, but the picture is constantly jiggling up and down due to the action of the projector. Normally your eyes adjust, but DLP eliminates the need to do so.

3. The picture never ages. After only a viewing or two, imperfections appear on the film due to wear. Especially during scenes with views of the sky on a sunny day, the black splotches are noticeable. Again, normally, your eyes adjust to it and ignore it. DLP eliminates this.

You'd be surprised about that. Remember that it was Disney that brought record crowds to Imax theaters for Fantasia 2000. When it was released to regular theaters, it didn't do much ($50 Million at Imax, $11 Million elsewhere domestically). Beauty and the Beast did another $24 Million this year (so far) at Imax theaters despite being a virtual retread of a movie we all have in our collections already.

Lloyd,

Good points, but IMAX (Fantasia 2000, Beaty and the Beast this year) is a 70mm large format FILM process.

With a level playing field, film still looks better. 70mm is still the state of the art, as it has been for 49 years now.

I hate to get into a digital versus film argument, but...

Star Wars II was shot digitally and I saw the trailer recently at a normal theater. The PQ of the trailer was better than any of the other trailors and the movie I was watching ... AND STAR WARS II WAS BEING SHOWN ON FILM.

I don't know what projector was being shown in Kansas but at the very least seeing the pixels should have been difficult.

The only shortcoming to digital presentations today is the 1280 horizontal size of TI's stuff, which is good but could be better. A 1920+ image should put all arguments to rest (but probably won't.)

Rlsmith,

I think Lloyd was trying to say that speciality showings of Disney stuff do better than you would expect.

And I will definitely agree that IMAX has more resolution than 1080p (vertically obviously). However, a QXGA image would get close in most respects.

Adebar,

The Plano theater will be very well maintained.

A word of caution to everyone:

Don't get caught up in picture quality or you won't enjoy the movie.

Yeah guys it was about two years ago when I saw the one in Olathe.

I saw Fantasia on it and I was I private screening. I could see the pixels from about mid way back in the theatre on very bright scenes.

Since it was a private screening they let us go up to the screen and look, the pixels were a little larger than my thumbnail.

Hopefully they have better ones now.

They also did just install a 250000 dollar digital projector in a local cinema for EP2. So I will go give it another look.

There don't seem to be any DLP theatres anywhere around the Detroit MI area. :(

Looks like I'm not the only one who'll be driving from Houston to Plano to catch ATOC. That theater is well maintained since the theater is right next to the TI site where the DLP group is. That theater used to get the first upgrades in the country since it was using TI OEM projectors. Don't know if that is still the case or not.

Phil,

Adebar is going and I will be going (seperately) so you're not crazy. I doubt I'll see it opening night but I will watch the movie digitally first. Maybe eventually film but not first.

Wow talk about cross-posting.

Ps. Adebar, You're not bringing your croc again are you? Having the croc does help to clear away your favorite seats. :)
