today I broke down and threw some money at this project.

I didn't want to be limited to micro-atx motherboards, but this chasis was too good to pass up...
http://www.coolermaster.com/products/atc/p610.htm

unfortunately, everyone in the country seems to be backordered on those. I ordered one anyway, but I may have to use a temporary case until it arrives.

with that step taken, I found myself limited to micro-atx motherboards, and the selection (for this projects needs at least) seems pretty dismal. I finally settled on the msi-km266 board. it has an agp slot, a resonable number of pci slots for the board size, it supports ddr ram, and it doesn't have a fan glued to it. then I threw in an athlon xp 2100+ and 512MB ram. I may add more ram later, as I'm hoping to run this without a hard drive installed.

I setteled on an ati radeon 9000 for the video card. As near as I've been able to determine, it works with the cvs version of xfree86, and is expected to work with the live version around janurary or so. I imagine I'll still be assembling and tweaking this thing at that time, so building from cvs in the meantime is acceptable. It also seemed to be one of the few radeons available without a fan glued to it.

I'm still looking for an audio card. I'm steering clear of the sb live since I only plan to use the s/pdif output, and the sb live doesn't have a great reputation on that count. I've heard mostly good things about the m-audio cards, but I've also heard that some models aren't as well supported in linux as others. anyone have recomendations?

I've not even looked into capture cards yet. I'll probably get dvd working first, and then worry about that.

I'm still looking for a good dvd drive to throw into the box as well.

anyway, it's a start. or at least it will be once the pieces start arriving in the mail.

you are right in steering clear of sb live. i have wasted so much time and effort trying to get ac3 passthrough working through my sb live without av synch problems and skipping.

i have read that the hoontech cards work pretty well in linux.

also, i recommend the Hauppauge WinTV card for capture. It is extremely well supported in linux and I have been using it flawlessly with tvtime with no picture quality problems whatsoever.
If you use alsa drivers version(s) 0.9.x I think you will do fine with the m-audio card AND the sbLive card. Version 0.9 fixed spdif out as well as a bunch of other stuff - performance, use of buffers, multiple sources simultaneously merging into the audio stream...

Versions 0.4.x and 0.5.x which redhat, mandrake and debian(stable) had in them were all broken with respect to spdif out, among other things.

Now go and buy an m-audio card and check it out. Then report back how well it worked. Then I'll buy one

I have the 600 series version of the ATC case. It rocks! And I want to throw it away and buy the new one cuz it looks cooler.

The radeon 8500, 8500Le, 9500 and 9700 all work with the component video out dongle. There is no mention of the 9000 and the dongle. Also, the binary driver FAQ and Release Notes say to use Gatos drivers if you want to get TV out, the AIW tuner and Infrared Remote working with any of the above cards.

Maxtor makes a new series of hard drives that are Silent. I have the 80G version and it is silent. They spent money on quiet bearings. That 2100+ is going to be a ***** to cool iconoclast. What heatsink/fankit are you planning to use?

Thats good to know. Maybe I'll take another look at it.

ok. :)

Right now I'm leaning towards the m-audio delta dio 2496. It's not as cool as their audiophile 2496, but the only digital out from my satellite decoder is toslink, and this one has toslink inputs.

So when the fanless 9000 arrived in the mail, it turns out to be build by sapphire using the ati chips (as opposed to being built by ati like the 9000pro). I don't know yet what that will mean for using the binary drivers, but the release notes for those drivers make a big deal of the difference between "powered by ati" and "built by ati". So I may well find myself building xfree from cvs until janurary.

Personally, I'm hoping to (eventually) use a VGARGB breakout cable to plug this thing right into the projector. A working tv out (either component or svideo) was not my biggest concern when choosing this card. Mine didn't come with a dongle, so if you're looking for component out, this may not be the best choice.

When I get a little further along, I'll let you know how it works. (I may even be persuaded to try the svideo out just for testing, if anyone is concerned about it working.)

That's good to know. If I get too frustrated setting up the diskless configuration, I'll keep that as a backup option.

Since that really super cool looking case doesn't come with a powersupply, I wandered over to www.endpcnoise.com and found a really quiet option. While I was there I noticed that they have a heatsink/fan option that is supposed to be super quiet for athlons up to 2200 (or 2600 if you have the thoroughbred version).
http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/...ml?id=vAqVoR9X

I've not worked with any of the athlons yet, so I was kind of trusting the marketing speak about that fan when I made the decision for the 2100. I'm also figuring that video playback won't be the biggest cpu strain, so even if it's not quite as efficient as the fan that came w/ the cpu, it'll be ok.

imagegeek,

have you actually got the sblive spdif out working? if so, can you tell me what hardware you were using? (motherboard, cpu, video card) and software (distro, kernel + any non-standard compile flags).

when i say working, i mean *flawlessly* (no stuttering, pops, etc.). i get an _almost_ flawless signal with the alsa0.9 drivers but the sblive (or the driver) incorrectly reports timing information to mplayer and xine, which results in a/v synch problems (in mplayer) and clicks (in xine).

any advice you could be would be greatly appreciated. i have been beating my head against the wall for three weeks now. the next step is to start debugging the alsa source code.
Have you guys tried the drivers from http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1 yet? I belive they are supposed to work with hwac3 out from mplayer...

They also support Livedrive and similar stuff, check them out!

Cheers, 42
Jerkyvision,

I don't know about my sblive. I use it on my workstation at work but the htpc box I'm building is different, and still at work. I don't have any hardware to plug it into at work to test it with. I have a couple of AV receivers at home that I will test it with this weekend. The htpc box I'm building has an intel i8x0 chipset with spdif both toslink and rca out. I would suggest rca first as some cheap toslinks suck. The drivers I am using for sound are just what Gentoo gave without unmasking alsa - which may be something to try if my spdif doesn't work.

I plan to bring the machine home tomorrow. Currently I am using an ATI Radeon VE, with DVI, tvout and 64M of ddr ram on it. I was going to buy an 8500Dv from a coworker but now he's keeping it. So I'm gonna just stick with the 7000 for a while and see how its DVI works with my sammy 507w.

I want an ieee1394 interface on my box (and my case has an output for it on front) so the 8500DV would be a nice fit - freeing up a pci slot on my matx mb.

Iconoclast,

I am using an Antec Power Supply with Super Quite fans in it. I think I am using a coolermaster copper heatsink. It runs without the fan but that made me nervous and I don't have my LM_Sensors working yet...

btw - here is my casem (the black one): http://www.coolermaster.com/products...es/600-vx1.jpg

Their new atc-630 looks cool too.

Gotta go. More this weekend as I start to integrate this box with my main display...

Looks good. Here is the Gentoo thread that says how to install them: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.p...ighlight=spdif

Even if you are not using Gentoo these instructions may be helpfull.
