Starting a Theater Build...

My childhood friends and I all grew up watching as many movies as we could in Chicago. Even as adults, we still talk about movies all the time. One of them even went into the industry but the rest of us took non-film jobs. Flash-Forward almost thirty years and now I am making place for us all to gather and watch movies. The first thing we had to do was come up for a name for the theater: One of my friends wanted to call it the "Safe Space", and one of my friends wanted to call it "Nuke" (which is the fictional drug in "Robocop 2"- an underrated movie).

Ultimately, we have decided on calling it the "Regression Chamber."

Below are the raw space pictures. We are removing the toilet.

Having a toilet as one of the seats in a theater would be very convenient.

Very convenient when you're sick and just want to watch movies all day. :)

Haha indeed.

This is a cool space. Is it in an old warehouse or something?

Update on the theater:
My friends are getting restless. Although they want the theater complete yesterday, I am making steady progress.

With the help of an awesome general contractor in Chicago, we demolished the toilet, put up framing and insulation (see pictures 1+2 below). The room dimensions are approximately 23 feet wide and 26 feet long.

Picture 1 (with the ladder) is the front of the theater and where we intend to put a 200 inch diagonal screen up.
Picture 2 is the back of the theater where there is two door frames, a hallway, and then a white door. The far left door frame is the entrance to the bathroom (the new home of the toilet, BigmouthinDC and NightSkyMurals!), the middle door frame is the hardware closet, and the white door is an egress door.
Picture 3 is some tile outside the front entrance to the building. p3bham asked if the building is an old warehouse- I believe it was, however, it was a bar on the first floor for the last 40 years and the current theater is where there was a 2 bedroom residence above the bar. The building is over a 100 years old though and the old brick still looks great. We intend to keep any and all old elements that have structural integrity (like the tile!)

Purchases to date: AIO Torus Power 12.5 kVA power unit and Barco Loki Cinemascope.

It is a lot of fun watching this project take shape and sharing it with AVS forums.:)

Better be a big bathroom if those two are going to live in there with the toilet. Also you're going to need to set up a separate system and video display so they won't be left out of the movie watching...

I kid. Looking good I'm very much looking forward to this space - I love the restoration of old buildings - the tile out front is very cool. But this should be a legendary man cave by the time you're done.

Update on the theater: The theater has been completed. The final calibration and first movie night were on the eve of the first day of quarantine in Chicago. The first movie night was a double feature: "Aliens" and "Texas Chainsaw Massarcre Part 2." It was unbelievable and the theater has only gotten better in the last two months. And we got the toilet out of the room! Much credit is due to Dennis Erskine and his associates who got involved in the project and helped us tremendously. Dennis, Steve, and Adam are welcome anytime to watch movies in Chicago! I will try to upload some pictures of the final product. The only thing we are now missing is a proper popcorn machine :):)
Another reccommendation:
Get Kaleidescape! It has a few gaps in selection, however, the quality of the sound and the video is fantastic and they have good customer service. We still need to sort out some downloads that may have some lagging but I think it is potentially a audio/video lag on our own hardware that needs to be tweaked. You can also let them know if there is anything that lights up on the transfer. For example, we downloaded "Inception," and it appeared that occasionally in certain scenes, the lumagen video processor would try to correct light levels and then image light would abruptly shift. In the extreme, it takes you out of the movie a bit. That's no good!
