I just purchased a 42" ED Panny Plasma and have the following setup:

- plasma broadcast version TH-42PWD5UY

- onkyo sr800 receiver

- sony 5-disc dvd player DVP-C650D (note this is non-progressive)

- component out to receiver and then from receiver to plasma

I tried a progressive dvd player side by side with the non-progressive and honestly could not tell a picture quality difference between a progressive signal to the plasma and a non-progressive signal. Evidently the line doubler and 3:2 pulldown do a good job or my eyes need to be checked.

So, I decided to leave the non-progressive hooked up and return the progressive player. I am seeing, however, that when watching dvds that I frequently lose a frame or two (completely black) and sometimes also get a couple horizontal static lines of "noise" around the same time as the lost frame. This happens dozens of times during a 2 hours movie. Other than that - perfect picture. I have never seen this effect with my Directivo source.

Since I returned the progressive player, I don't know whether this is the plasma monitor not doing a good job 100% of the time decoding the signal or if my non-progressive dvd player or even receiver is the problem.

Has anyone else had this type of behavior with their panny or other plasma and a progressive or non-progressive source? Any opinions on whether a progressive player would be "better" for my tv even though I can't see a picture difference, since the tv won't have to do more work?

Thanks,

Tim

I've got both a non-progressive DVD player (actually, a DVD/LD combo player, Pio DVL-919) and a progressive player (Denon 1600) mated with my Panny ED panel...I can't honestly say I've ever seen this type of behavior on either DVD player (yes, I sometimes use my interlaced DVD output just for a lark). I'm certainly no expert, but I can't imagine why this sort of effect would be generated by the Panny--seems like the Sony might be the problem???

See if you can isolate the potential problem source by first removing the receiver from the video chain...hook your Sony DVD changer directly to the plasma and see if the problem is reproducible. If you still see this effect, then at the very least you know your receiver isn't the culprit. I would also recommend using the S-video or composite output on the Sony to see if the problem crops up on THAT output, maybe the voltage is off on one of the component RCAs?

After all of that, if you're still seeing problems, I would personally just audition another DVD player--interlaced or otherwise--just to see if there's a bum circuit in the Panny. This is just my opinion and maybe some more technically astute members have some better advice, but there are certainly some steps you can take to narrow down the possible cause(s) of your problem. Whatever the outcome, I hope you don't have a problem with your plasma...that was a MAJOR scare for me after making the largest Internet purchase of my life for my panel so I know how aggravating this must be for you. Good luck!

elbarneso,

I had EXACTLY the same problem with my Panny ED and a Sony CX850D 200 DVD changer. After 6 weeks of a p***ing match between Panasonic and Sony, each blaming the other, I finally accepted the position of a third party Panasonic service company that the two were "just incompatible".

I had the Sony cleaned and alignment checked which was said to be "within spec".

Tried several other brands of DVD players and even a newer model of Sony. None of them showed the problem.

Packed my Sony to 3 different Panny dealers to try it on their demo Panny ED plasmas. None of those showed the problem.

Panasonic sent a third party authorized service tech to replace the major component board which showed the same problem.

Tried one last dealer and found the same problem on their demo so I decided it really was an incompatiblity.

If you want to keep your C650D, put it on the S-Video input of the Panny. That works fine with my Sony. Some members on this forum maintain the picture is better on S-Video. I'm not sure I agree, but if there is a difference, I'm hard pressed to be able to explain it.

Artpease,

Thanks so much for the reply - it's good to hear that I'm not the only one wth this problem and that's it's most likely the same panny/sony incompatibility.

I'll give the s-video a shot, or just buy a panny xp30 dvd player and move the sony c650d to the other room. Sorry to hear you went through so much to track down the problem, but thanks for saving me a lot of time and energy.

elbarneso,

I HAD an xp-30 on order, but just received an out-of-stock/discontinued cancellation of that order from efunctional.com.
