What are people using for step lighting? There seem to be a number of options available, varying in cost and complexity. I don't really want to use one of the systems that has a bullnose and lights built into the top, front or both. I really want to just build the steps with a little overhang and mount something into the gap. I also don't want to have to replace an entire rope of light if one bulb goes bad. What are the most common solutions?

On my 1.5" thick riser/steps, I made a bullnose rounded overhang by about 2" longer than the platform/step. Used a 1/2" router bit to make the bullnose.

I then simply screwed the rope light clips in under the overhang and clipped the rope lights in. The rope lights are good for about 25,000+ hours. Very simple task to complete and the rope lights cannot be seen....just the light they produce. So, if one of the bulbs did die, it wouldn't look bad.

Hope this helps.
