STF-2 died; need advice on choosing replacement sub (PB-1000? or VTF-5 Mk2?)

Hi all,

It seems my STF-2 is in need of a new amp; it works, but is very weak. Called HSU and they said a new amp would be $180.

But at that price, wondering if I shouldn't just upgrade to something else? My room is not large (a bit less than 1500 cu. ft.). I would use the sub for movies, but also music, and especially classical music. I'd especially like to get the best sub I can in the $300-$600 range that can handle decently organ music like the Saint-Saens symphony.

That said, my budget is not great: maybe $300-$600. Obviously, at that price, only so much can be done. Though I don't tend to listen to the music very loud, so perhaps that helps.

In any case, I was looking at the PB-1000 pro, or the VTF-2 Mk5, or even the RSL Speedwoofer.

Which of these would be best at the organ music (even down to 16hz)? Or is there another option that might do well also?

Thanks,

Joshua

I bought an stf-2 with a fried amp and ended up buying the amp through hsu for $180. It’s going to be tough to find something comparable for that price but you should be able to find a used svs sub in the 250-400 range. I’ve actually been looking for another stf-2 or vtf-2 mk2 but they are pretty hard to find locally…

You're on the right track, either the SVS or HSU are good performers at their price points, and will give you a much better low end than what you're used to.

I'd forget the Speedwoofer, not that it's bad, but it doesn't go low and doesn't represent a performance upgrade over what you would have if you spent the $180 to replace the amp.
