HI all,

Ok, so the last time I was on the forums I was convinced to buy a Panasonic Plasma. I forgot what model number, but was unable to pull the trigger and now have to start my research over. So am I still looking to buy a Panasonic plasma? Or is there another TV that will give me a better bang for my buck? My price range is around $800. I would like to get the biggest screen possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Go look at them, Best Buy usually carries the Panasonic and Samsung plasmas in that price range. Myself, I preferred the pq of the Samsung over the Panasonics that I looked at when buying a set for my bedroom. I wound up with a Samsung LED in the bedroom because it is so thin, and a Samsung 58B560 for the family room. Not a fanboy of either manufacturer, just liked the way Samsung handled the all around pq.

Agree with localnet. Take a DVD that you are familiar with which will showcase what it is you think is a good picture and then have the store play it using your top two picks. But before playing on either set, first try to determine if the store has everything set way too high as far as color, sharpness, etc. And if so, adjust to your liking. Then compare.

You can get a real nice Panny plasma in the $800 range. I would look around and test it out and if you like a certain model and want to save a few bucks you might want to look online. You might be able to pick a higher model which you couldn't purchase in store for much less online such as a G10 depending on size you want.

Panasonic has better resistance towards TIR and some members say its more reliable and it has better blacks. samsung on the other hand can be calibrated more to a T (depending on model) to have a better PQ.

honestly i think Panasonic is the better choice just because OVERALL it has best possible PQ with Very great processing more resistant towards TIR and reliable.

So it seems the general consensus is still Panasonic, but are their any recommendations on models? I mean is there a certain series I should aim for? Or a series that I should stay away from?

at 800 dollars there is the 42s1(which is usually 899ish but mid/low 800s online) which is 1080p and the 50x1 which is 720p and has been

I would definitely throw the Samsung in the mix. I'd like to point out to you that the Samsung has tinted their screens like Pioneer did which when you have ambient lighting in the room they will provide better black levels than the Panasonic(the B650s and up are better at this than the lower end models but the price goes up as well).

Hopefully Rauly Fingers is OK with taking advice from Cincinnati
. (I'm assuming your screen name may be related the to Rollie Fingers from the Oakland A's).

He said his price point is 800 dollars which removes all of the samsungs with decent AR coating and any 1080p samsung plasma.

So what about 720p VS 1080p? I read a lot about 1080p no being necessary depending on the screen size. Is this true? Or am I misreading the posts?

depends on screen size and viewing distance. 720p at 50" is fine for a lot of people.

Personally im choosing 42s1 over 50x1 because of the resolution/seating distance(seating distance isn't fixed so I will probably sit close), I will be watching bluray and 1080i baseball, the s1 has a better picture regardless of resolution, and because 50" won't fit in my car, 42" will fight upright in the back seat and I get all the benefits of buying from a b and m with a good return policy. I have looked at the 50b450, its AR coating is not as good as the x1 and s1 but seems to preserve its black levels better in bright lighting.

If you want size; 50" x1 is a good set and b450 looks good too.

Find a few plasmas side by side with 50/42/720/1080 and see how much of a difference you can tell. Most of the time at stores they are fed 1080i.

Its been pointed out but i'll add my 2 cents.

first you are on a budget man so in no time should you cross your mind about resolution or other features if you are strict on a budget....

yes screen size x resolution x distance x source this all makes up for it.

at 50" its still consider small for 1080p however you can make it up when going 8ft or less (6ft is the sweet spot).

42" forget it.

source : very limited blu ray is true 1080p games arent (upsacaled) OTA is 1080i or 720p.

and distance goes back to size of screen.
