Just curious what everyone is using as their storage format of choice. I'm sure it will vary depending on the content type.


DVD material, for example, do you convert to avi/mkv (which is possible without losing much/if any quality and cut file size in half)? Use disc images? If you use disc images, are they untouched, or movie only? Also, which tools are used?


Just trying to get an idea of the "norm" and form a plan for my new server size.

For movies I only keep the main title.


mkv (most content)

m2ts

avi (not much)

wtv (RecordedTV)

Main title to MKV with audio track and forced subtitles. No idea what the format of the actual tracks is inside the mkv file. I'm happy in my ignorance. I don't see the reason to spend more time trying to make the file smaller and degrade the quality of the original track. Others may see it differently and factor in screen size, storage requirements, love of tinkering, etc...

I do the same. MakeMKV I think puts the mpeg2 video in a .mkv container with no compression.

Same here - with affordable priced hard drives, I just rip the entire disc.
