"Stranded on a desert island" themes?

890 Views 27 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Rupert
It doesn't have to be an island locale....just movies that show the protagonist using their wits to survive, find their way home, etc.

I've seen a few, but there must be others out there like these:

Cast Away

Swiss Family Robinson

Blue Lagoon (ouch!)

Flight of the Phoenix

Lost, the TV Series

What are your favorite movies with the "stranded someplace" theme?

Midnight Express?
My Side of the Mountain (book was better)
The Incredible Journey (book was better)
Mosquito Coast ('voluntary' isolation)
Alive
The Pianist (talk about survival!)
The Most Dangerous Game
Lord of the Flies (1963 version)
Life of Pi (due out in 2007!)
Empire of the Sun

I'm sure I can think of more...I love this type of movie. Also, if you want to read a great story about one person trying to make it against incredible odds, try "The Long Walk" by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman).

Thanks for the suggestions, Bob. There are a couple in there that I have not seen...I'll check them out.

I actually read The Long Walk some years ago...great book!
See less See more
The Warriors (the ultimate "find/fight their way home" movie, IMHO)

Goonies

Stand By Me
RED DAWN how could you forget this?

as for surviving on wits try REPO MAN.

The POSTMAN is worthy as well.
Swept Away - Madonna's in a bikini nuff said. :)
What's the name of that old-school movie with Lee Marvin stranded in the south Pacific with the japanese guy? Haven't seen it since I was a kid.....I thought it was great.
Does "The Edge" count?

Cool! I'm reading it right now. The first section is kind of hard to get through, but now, after the ship sinks...Wow!. A great book.

Doug
THE NAKED PREY with Cornel Wilde.

The Lee Marvin movie was HELL IN THE PACIFIC.

ENEMY MINE qualifies, I think.

Life of Pi is a great "discussion" book, and hopefully that comes through in the movie.
How about that movie where Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier are handcuffed together, where Curtis is racist and Poitier is the "Angry Black Man"? Can't think of the name offhand.
can't believe no one has mentioned Papillon--I think being sentenced to life on a remote island in French Guyana qualifies doesn't it?

Into Thin Air--Death on Everest (made for TV movie re the 1996 tragedy)

Waterworld

The Road Warrior

if you're counting Blue Lagoon, you have to count Paradise with a nekkid Phoebe Cates (wow)

Planet of the Apes (stranded in the future)

2001 Space Odyssey (stranded in space, time, another dimension)

Alien (maybe these space movies are too obvious and easy.....thus....

Apollo 13

The Island (the one with pirates starring Michael Caine)

Marooned (yea, another stranded in space one)

The Day After (talk about a survival movie)

Oh, how could I forget an obvious one--Robinson Crusoe on Mars!

and if TV counts, these Seinfeld episodes:

The Stranded (left at a party)

The Subway

The Parking Garage

The Movie Theater? (the one where they can't seem to get to the same movie)

The Chinese Restaurant......yea, these are stretches but have the same basic theme
See less See more
Oh, man - "Paradise" - remember that gorgeous, huge m--f in the underwater scene? Could get lost in that.
Sorry - couldn't resist. That was the one outstanding scene in that movie --- and I DO mean outstanding.

If you like one man against incredible odds, try reading Adrift (true story).

For this tread: Silent Running (Sci Fi)
