I have an AIW Radeon card in my PC, and I plugged it into a Viewsonic 1060 projector today that I borrowed from work. I normally run at 1280x1024 on my monitor, and forgot to change the settings before plugging in the projector.

It turns out the projector down-scales the 1280x1024 image to 1024x768 when it projects. I run at this resolution because TV looks great at 4 times its normal resolution. It also turns out it looks pretty damn good downscaled to 1024x768.

I played around and ran the projector at several resolutions. (1280x1024, 1024x768 and 800x600) The strange thing is that plain old TV looked best at 1280x1024. Both the AIW and the projector are doing some scaling at this point. The AIW is multiplying it by 4 and projector is downgrading it to 3/4 the resolution. With all that scaling going on, why does it look so good?

Or do I just need to do some more tweaking at 1024x768?

Needless to say, I'll have to play with a DVD in the morning...
