When I received my AE700 from FedEx on Monday, I noticed stuff sliding around in the box when I tipped it. Hoping that nothing had been broken or damaged during shipment, I opened the box immediately.

The remote and battery and other loose stuff were all just lying up on the top cardboard - wrapped in cellophane but not packed in foam or anything to hold them in place during shipping.

Is this how they come or has someone opened this box before? I can't imagine a company like Panasonic shipping something this way. I haven't gone any further with it than this initial check. I've been busy installing my electric Dalite with remote (another story).

My concern is that this box has been opened and returned due to bad pixels or worse. I think I'll open it up again tonight and take a closer look.

Thanks,

Neil

Mine came the same way. remote, battery, cable, manual all loose packed in a top cardboard compartment in the box on top of the PJ. No foam or filler of any kind.

PJ was in the bottom of the box in a separate cardboard partioned part of the box wrapped in a antistatic plastic bag. The PJ was pretty secure in the custom fit cardboard section. Just the stuff in the top cardboard compartment rattleing around.

Mine also came that way. I was very concerned before opening it, because I could hear the loose stuff inside, and there was a sticker on the box that said it had been "inspected in accordance with TSA regulations." Great, I thought, some careless government worker opened my box and didn't repack it correctly. Fortunately, it was just the loose manual and remote.

I bought mine from ProjectorPeople and, as I recall, part of the deal was that they were going to take the projector out of the box and turn it on to check for dead pixels and make sure the lamp was working and so on before they shipped it out to me.

They told me in advance that's what they were going to do, so I wasn't surprised to find that it appeared to have been unpacked and removed from the box. I doubt there was a chance that I was getting a "used" unit or anything because I was in that first wave of purchasers of this model in the USA.

Are you sure your provider didn't do the same procedure?

Slight hijack:

What's the lens cap for?

I took mine off when I set it up and it's been off ever since. Is there a reason to put the lens cap on when not being used ? Of course, with my mounting location, it would be very hard to do anyway.

No.. no problem... you are not hijacking the thread.

The lens was found off during shipping, NOT in between regular usage.

Yes, in my opinion there IS a major PROBLEM with receiving a shipped pj and opening the box and finding the lens cap off.

Yes, you are correct. I for one will be leaving the lens off when I permanently mount the pj in a hush box. BUT, it makes your heart skip a beat when you open the box and there is the cap... laying next to the projector lens..

mine came packed fairly tight with cardboard protecting everything. now you have me wondering if my projector wasnt tested. they were getting a new shipment in a few days when i called and i placed the order getting it a few days later.perhaps you just got added value of having the product checked out .

I can't say for sure about yours, but mine was apparently packed the same as everyone else's. That is, the remote, cord, batteries and manual were on top in a separate box but loosely packed and sliding around. The PJ was enclosed in an anti-stat bag (untaped), tightly packed in a cardboard suspension area below. My lens cap was off and underneath the PJ.

I can add that everything worked great once I set it up (and got the component cables pushed all the way onto the RCA jacks on the DVD player, that is).

No apparent dead pixels and a simply AMAZING picture. It's like having a 106" plasma!

Our's arrived with the remote, Video cable, Power cord, and shrink wrapped Batteries, usual paperwork. In a neatly folded plastic bag, taped closed with one strip of tape. Much like most of the electronics have been packaged that we have purchased over the years.

This was in December 2004, it is quite possible Panasonic changed the way the factory was or (is) packaging product.

same experience here - er- "questionable" factory packaging and the loose items. got mine from the good folks up at Visual Apex via 2-day shipping. my prior purchasing experience for mail-order stuff typically found such an item shipped in a separate, larger, well-cushioned box (this to both conceal & protect the contents). in this instance my AE700 arrived in the factory carton (got my attention) and upon closer examination the box was - OMG - dented and torn in several areas, one dangerously close to the lens  i totally lucked out as i have 0 problems and just love this pj.

FWIW you can insist on external packaging, although this is generally the case when you buy even moderate to more expensive items like o'scopes and spectrum analyzers
