OK I have a file that is encoded in H.264. CoreAVC (1.2.0.0) is installed and I am using MPC 6.4.9.0. Other H.264 encoded files will open just fine in the player. Properties show up like this when I right click on the files that work:

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1920x1088 [Video]

Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384Kbps [Audio]

Subtitle: DVD Subpicture [Subtitle]

Now this problem file only shows the Audio stream when I open it in MPC and check properties. No Video or Subtitle shows up for it. Naturally all I get is audio and no video from the file.

Here is where it gets strange. If I open the problem file in Windows Media Player it plays fine. If I check the properties of the file while in WMP it shows the video codec as CoreAVC just like it should.

Why would MPC have a problem with this particular file but none other? And why would WMP work fine with it?

Noone has any ideas here? This is a very strange problem. I've run GSpot on the file and it shows everything just like it should. H264/mpeg4 for video and AC3 for audio. Yet MPC won't show the picture, just the sound. And other H.264 files work fine, including this one (but only in WMP).

Perhaps MPC is using another x264 decoder besides CORE? Or perhaps another version of Halli Splitter causing a conflict?

Oh well thanks but that one stubborn file refuses to work right with MPC even after unchecking that box. WMP ofcourse - no problem. Only this one file of mine has this problem.

Strangest thing I've seen in a while.

Install Haali Media splitter (google it), and select it as a prefered filter in MPC (just like you did with CoreAVC). That should fix your problem.

It's installed (was part of the community codec pack I have on there). Also adding to the confusion here is that there is more than one Haali item to click on under external filters and it's not real obvious exactly which one I need.

It's called Haali Media Splitter (I think there are two Media Splitters, it should be the first one).

Thanks! That took care of it.

Quick question though. It seems to have broken mpeg2 files. They play back - but are choppy as hell all of the sudden. Is there anything in the haali config that would cause that to happen?

I had the same problem with Haali. I now use Nero's File Splitter, it works like a champ. It comes with Nero 7.0.

Thankyou. That has solved my problem. I can now open the one H.264 encoded file that was having issues (no video) and also mpeg2 playback functions properly again.

Strangely enough when playing H.264 files I still get the Haali splitter icon showing up even after removing it from the external filters box of MPC. Only coreavc and nero splitter are there now. When playing mpeg2 files, the haali icon doesn't show up and nero is used instead. Why exactly this is happening I don't know but at this point I do not care. It works and that's what matters.

Thanks again for helping me with this. MPC and these filters - can be a real PITA for a noob who doesn't know much about this stuff. Very confusing.
