Strange Recording Error

337 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BaysideBas
Every now and then (1-2 days a month, I would say) my ReplayTV will start recording shows in 1 minute chunks and will create a new show listing for each segment.

I have been running it for about three years and this just started happening in the last 3-6 months. This gets kind of annoying, luckily it hasn't messed up recording anything that I actually want to watch, just filler shows that I watch if I have time.

Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening again?

You're periodically losing the signal. First thing you do is check all cables and connections.

To me, this means the unit is rebooting over and over. If this is a Replaytv 2000, 3000 or Showstopper. The problem likely is caused by poor connection of the power supply to motherboard connector. If this is a newer Replaytv model, the cause of the problem isn't so easily identified.

A telltale would be if you could determine that the gaps between the recorded segments are of similar duration and that duration corresponds to a reboot cycle. Just try to record a channel that has a clock on display, such as a morning news show. It should go a long way in pointing a finger at the possible cause.

They have been upgrading the cable and telephone poles in the area for the timeframe that the recording errors occured. So that might be the case.

Horrible way for the ReplayTV to handle a signal loss. It's a pain to go through and delete 30+ new show categories when this does happen through the remote.

What are you talking about?? If the Replay does not detect a signal, it won't record. It has no affect on categories or record channels you set up unless your cable company changes the channel numbers, which would affect Replay channels but not theme channels.
In rereading your original posting, I have to withdraw my assessment of signal loss. Loss of signal on a program, even if it happens multiple times, will NOT result in multiple segments, it will result in a single, abbreviated recording. Mikeyboy is quite right, it appears to be a rebooting case. Another thing that may cause the multiple segments is repeated power loss. Is your Replay on a UPS? Is the power cord intact? Is it firmly plugged in? But before you get carried away looking for unlikely causes, look into the most likely, as Mikeyboy suggested.
