I just hooked up a new DirecTV 3 LNB dish. While I'm waiting for the new STB to arrive I want to use my old Sat A4 STB. Got the dish pointed correctly but the signal oscillates between 0 and 80 on some transponders and no signal on others. I'm using a 100 foot length of RG6 to temporarily sight the dish. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You are in trouble. SONY made a design change between the "A" 2,3,4 series of receivers and the A 55, A 65 series. I have never obtained the whole story but the long and short of it the older SONY IRD's do not work well with the new LNBs. On the other hand, we have had many instances where the signal meters on the A 4 IRDs did not work with the new LNBs but the receiver worked fine. Hopefully you fall into the latter camp. With the very old IRDs the receiver could not lock on to the signal ( perhaps a voltage issue ) and the picture behaved like your meter, oscillating between in and out. I have only seen this on the problem with the older SONY IRDs.

I've seen this symptom on old Sony receivers many times. Most commonly, the receiver shows no signal strength on transponder #3, though some will occasionally show no signal strength on transponders 1, 5, 7 and even 9, yet the receiver reliably displays programming derived from those transponders.

DirecTV doesn't reveal which programs are on which transponders, but if you go to the DBSForums Home Page and scroll down to and click, "DirecTV Transponder Map"" under the heading "Technology" you will see a fairly current list of program transponder assignments that you can use determine if your signals really are dropping out on those transponders. (Last updated August 4, 2003).

The Sony B65/Hughes GAEBOA had some tuner problems when supplied with software revision 5444.0 but those were remedied with the newer software, which, if I recall correctly, is 5475.0

audiblesolutions, you were exactly right. Changing the IRD to a multi sat unit fixed it (Good thing I had a direcTivo laying around!) Many thanks!
