I just moved from the US to Cambodia. What I want to do is pull video off a cable box at my brother's house in the US using my laptop in Cambodia. I am thinking of buying a Slingbox Solo, but they are not well reviewed by users on the internet and most of the reviews are several years old.

The cable box will be located in a spare bedroom so I will be the only person accessing this particular box. The laptop will be hooked up to a 720p DLP projector. My internet in Cambodia is broadband, with the speed ranging from 750 kb/sec up to 1.5 mb/sec depending upon time of day. I do not think the internet over here will support streaming HD.

Are there better options than Slingbox? Please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but I am not familiar with media streamers.

I have scanned the first several pages of this forum and did a search but need more direct advice.

Thank you in advance for the assistance.

Never seen a bad review of the slingbox (OK went and read some on amazon). Its an absolutely incredible peice of HW and SW. I never have bugs with it since it was new 3 years ago. It works very well. the guide and live buffering are excellent. I have virtually 0 complaints with it. Compared with all the buggy products on the market today they should be applauded for building such a quality product.

I've tested it all over the world. No dont expect the best picture quality ever. But if you have a reliable connection then it will work great. There is even local buffering to help eliminate network issues.

Setup can be a pain for some folks. Getting the ports forwarded on the router is the tough part of setup. People love to bash sling because they charge for support. No wonder why when they only charge $140 for a product that should easily cost $300 IMO.

I've installed 3 others besides mine and everyone loves the sling. I seldomly ever get support calls either. They just work.

Some complaints of the HW dying prematurely. 1 of 4 we had died in 18 months. The others are all 2+ years and still working.
