Studio Speakers for guitar input and receiver

689 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Skinfax1
Good Evening audio experts,

I will start with saying that I am an amateur in the subject. I plan to buy a pair of active studio speakers for guitar playing and recording. The input would be Line6 HX Stomp effect processor and amp modeller. As I also own a receiver (wow!) I would like to use those monitors for surround system as I also have some passive speakers I can use.

So the question is. Is it possible to have a "box" with two inputs , one for a receiver and one for Stomp and output going to speakers and a switch so I can swap between the two ? Does device like that exist ? Also there would have to be some kind of converter between the receiver
and monitors. My receiver is Yamaha RX-V475 and it doesn't have the RCA pre-out (I believe thats what you use to connect receiver to active speaker or subwoofer).

Thank you for any advice and suggestions.

Cheers

If your receiver has no pre-outputs, you can’t use active speakers with it.

I am not sure I understand what you are planning. Do you want to use the receiver for producing, i.e. mixing in surround, or for passive listening to finished (surround) mixes?
HI Skinfax1, thanks for response.

I want to be able to switch those speakers between receiver - for home theater use - and guitar processor. Therefore wondered whether there is an interface I can use to switch between the inputs.

Thanks

How about an adapter like this one i.e. "Russound ADP-1.2 Speaker-level to Line-level Adapter" ? (sorry cant post links yet)

Thanks

So you want active studio speakers exclusively for playing guitar through a hardware FX? Why not a guitar amp?

In case you want to write your own songs, maybe at a later time, then an ITB (in the box = software) solution seems to be the better solution than a hardware stomp fx.

Thanks Skinfax,

Not exclusively hence my post and question. I already have a Stomp and it is an amp modeller so you need a speaker not guitar amp. I can get pair of PA speakers but I can get some low to middle range studio monitors for similar price and those suit better the home use anyway.
I just checked and your receiver is indicated as having two digital outs: optical and coax.
You have lots of options but the worst IMO is going with active monitors and trying to chain their input analog to the receiver.

In general it is best to connect the music gear to an audio interface/mixer and go into a DAW.
And the DAW is connected to the monitoring.

With your AVR I see several options for you:

1. Passive monitors - if you connect the DAW to the AVR digitally, then a simple speaker-switch for the L/R-speakers would allow you to switch between the front L/R and the studio monitors.

2. Active monitors. They could be connected directly to the DAW. Either analog, SPDIF or bluetooth. Bluetooth can be problematic for musicians due to additional latency. If the monitors have a digital consumer input (either coax or optical, NOT AES/EBU only!) then you could connect them directly to your AVR (while the AVR receives the signal digitally from the DAW, over its digital input).
