Stupid Question: How do I know if I'm running 480p/720/1080?

360 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  PeRsIaN_PiMp
This is, I'm sure, the stupidest question ever asked on AVS. But I can't seem to quite grasp it. How do I find out what I'm running at? I know p is progressive and i is interlaced... but 480? 720? 1080? How do I find out?

Thanks and sorry fo the stupid question,

What are you running?

If it's a PC, these ATSC resolutions roughly translate to their PC counterparts.

480p = 720x480

720p = 1280x720

1080i = 1920x1080i/1920x540p

1080p = 1920x1080

Also, these signals are available only over high bandwidth video connectors like Component (Y Pb Pr), VGA(RGBHV), DVI or HDMI etc.

RF, Composite, Y/C (s-video) are limited to 480i even when being output from a PC.

Navid,

Are you using Powerstrip, Windows or ATI control panel to set your resolution?

If Windows (or in other words, you've never set/changed your resolution): right click on empty space on desktop --> properties --> settings. It shows you your resolution. This will always be progressive.

If Powerstrip: right click on icon --> display. Shows you your resolution.

I don't use ATI, so I'm not sure about that exactly, but it's bound to be similar.

No matter what resolution you're running on the video card, if it's being output over S-video or Composite, it is effectively 480i.
Thanks for the prompt replies.

I am running it over a 5m DVI-D. I used to use Powerstrip when I had Win2k Pro, but last night, I did a clean install of XP and it totally screwed up my ATI Drivers... so I'm dealing what that right now. But you guys definitely answered my question... thanks.

I'll set the resolution for my projector at the highest that it can go :) I think it was just set at 1024 x 768 earlier. And I think I will migrate to using Powerstrip as the ATI software has sucked for me under XP. I might even consider going back to 2k.

I have a Panasonic PT-L300U and a Flat-Panel both connected to my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro.

Again, thanks for all your help,
