Stupid question regarding RCA speaker wires

207 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Kensai
I'm using cables that are single RCA on one end and two parts bare wire on the other end because of the hookups native to the equipment in my office setup. My question is which wire (active or ground) corresponds to red speaker terminal and which corresponds to the black speaker terminal? Or does it make any difference? I get sound regardless of how I hook them up, but haven't really tested the system under anything other than a low to moderate level. Am I losing anything if they're reversed? Is there any chance of damage if they're reversed? Or is everything cool regardless?

Thanks for the help.

Red is active and black should be ground. The center pin of the RCA is positive with the other being ground. You will get sound either way but if they are reversed (out of phase) you will have a sucked out kind of sound with less bass.
Just make sure that if you are using two speakers you have them wired the same.
