I'm looking for a sub $100 DVD player that upconverts (I need 720p), has decent deinterlacing and displays grey bars for 4:3 material instead of black bars. I searched the forum but was unable to locate any useful info.

i don't know how helpful this is, but here's a list of all 1080p dvd players at newegg.com. you might find one that meets your requirements.

Phillips 5990/5992 is best bang-for-buck for pillarboxing, USB2.0 (fat32 flash drive or external-powered hard drive), DivX, region free via remote codes, $40-60, bright/contrast/color/sharpness controls at DVD player level, 720p-1080p HDMI, uses Mediatek chipset for average deinterlacing and lightning quick layer changes. Oppo 983 is best over all for $400. PS3 also pillarboxes, plays blu-ray, DVD, and games, plays divX including divx-hd from external hard drive, flash drives, streaming media from networked puters, surfs the web playing Hulu or Youtube, all at 720p-1080p, for $300-400.
