Recommend me a receiver for the bedroom. Must have capability to convert analog 2 channel stereo or FM broadcast to surround sound. It will be driving 4 in-wall speakers. Music first application so musicality is very important. It will be used with a X-10 module to act like a fancy clock radio. So must be able to retain settings with the power cut off. Budget less than $200.00

My local Costco has the Pioneer 711 at about 199, and a $20 rebate on their website. Great bang for the buck if you have one near you. JR

You would probably get better quality going with a used older prologic receiver. Many had a surround stereo mode which sent right channel to front and back right and left channel to front and back left. In any case, to use with 4 speakers and dolby surround, you will need to have a phantom center setting.

Try checking eBay...you might find a decent Kenwood or JVC or something that will fit the bill. You might even get lucky and find something like an Onkyo TXSV454 or an HK AVR40 or something along those lines for around $200.

For $228 you can get a H/K AVR125 refurb (Z) with full two year warranty at the harman audio store. It has Logic 7 and DPLII to convert 2 channel to surround. My experience with H/K refurbs is that they are as good as, and sometimes better, than brand new.
