Sub + Cellphone = Mess

Hi all,

Nothing earth shattering here but I just got my 1st cell phone and learned this lesson and never saw it posted on AVS so I figured I'd put it up here for those who haven't had the pleasure of this problem.

So I have a nice old HSU VTF-2 (original) and have it in a back corner with Quad-shielded Coaxial cable (with crimp on RCA connectors) for wiring. I'd guess about 20-25 feet of that cabling. Never any issue at all with interference or picking up anything (static, hiss, radio channels, NOTHING).

Got a cell phone and all that changed. If the phone is within 5 ft or so (roughly) I get a 20-30 second static noise every couple minutes. Of course the phone being in the room next to the sub on a desk I forget it's only a few feet away but on the other side of the wall.

Anyways - Not a big mystery just something that is happening and I thought I'd post it to let others know of the possible issue and it's cause. For me it was quick and easy to diagnose as the sub static was new and the phone was new and the proximity was easy to notice as the cause.

Some GSM cell phones have that effect on every speaker--tv speakers, speakerphones, even PA systems while you are giving a speech to a hundred people. And it always sounds the same. The only fix is to keep the two apart!
yup, I had the same issue, i used to just sit my cell on top of my guitar amp during practice. anytime the cell was about to go off I got the duh duh duh, duh duh duh.

needless to say I found a different spot for the cell. lol.
I am in charge of cellular phones for a military air force base and this happens all the time. Especially the Cingular or T-Mobile phones. Verizons I have yet to hear to this sort of thing. Isn't it weird? I mean most subwoofers are shielded too so for the cell phones to still cause interference is just plain weird! My RAZR V3b does this on everything except my main HT room...could be the quality of shielding on the interconnects/devices? I am stumped as to the cause or fix for this other then keeping them apart from your hifi...just my thoughts on this...
What a strange coincidence. I just discovered my cell phone having this effect about a half hour before reading this thread! :)
I've got a cingular phone which gives me the nice "Hum" sound before it rings, then i have the Nextel which gives you the ever popular "CLICK CLICK CLICKTYCLACKTYCLICK" sound when it rings.... I'd honestly be curious why such a small low-power device can have such an effect on equipment.

Never mind that, what do you think it's doing to your head?

RF is never good for you...and the little amount that cellphones use over time...not good. Actually, I heard that cell phones can put out to 5 watts of RF! Thats quite a bit for something so small....not good on your ole noodle!

These small low power devices are designed to transmit microwaves, through an omnidirectional antenna, to a cell tower, miles away.
I'm speculating long term use of cell phone has partially cooked my noodle.

I could be wrong, but I think that's only the case for phones where your head isn't next to the antenna (i.e. mobile phones installled in your car). I think the handheld phones most of us use these days are about half that.

There have been several studies that have gone back and forth on whether or not there is any risk of anything from a cell phone. The last one I saw showed evidence that there was. I can't remember what there was a risk of (I probably knew until that last call I made). But I seem to remember that the risk difference between heavy cell users and non or moderate cell users was pretty significant.
I saw in my cell phone manual a warning that said that you should only have cell phones no closer than 1 inch to any part of your body. Not very realistic, which makes it all the more intreresting that they put a warning in the manual about it...

It's called CYA. Costs less to do this then be sued by someone who said you should have warned me. Whether it's real or not. many companies have been sued and lost mega bucks to junk/psudo science claims because it was popular in public opinion and people for the most part people are not trained to think scientifically but emotionally.
