Sub connections

Some sub connections let you use the speaker wire that goes to the front speakers to control the sub, in stead of a LFE type deal. I wonder how well this can work. Some subs companies recommend it this way. What if the only sound playing is a center channel, will there be no bass? Same with surrounds? Seems strange to only have the subwoofer working during left and right front audio. I am talking about a 5.1 or 7.1 system here.

What am I missing?

My understanding is you would only want to use the speaker level inputs in a 2 channel set up.

EDIT: Actually, if you set you mains to large and the cc and surrounds to small and no on the sub, all the bass info from those channels should be routed to the mains but why bother if your receiver has an lfe out and your sub has an lfe/line level in.
The reason I mentioned it is when I watch tv or a movie at a moderate setting, the "auto" feature on the sub doesn't always tun itself on. But I hear people say with the speaker wire hookup, it isn't an issue.

The sub only turns on when there is bass. If you're auto on feature isn't coming on soon enough when there is bass, you probably need to set up your sub properly. Make sure all your speakers are balanced and your line level output is high enough to turn the sub on a lower listening levels. You may have to lower the gain on the sub to compensate for the higher setting. Using an spl meter would help. If you like a lot of bass (not boomy) you may want to set the sub level setting a bit hotter then what your mains are set at.
