I understand the concept of not boosting a null during eq. Most times, you are just dumping amp power to try to fix a problem that can't be fixed with eq. What about a broader based boost that does help with frequency response.

Here is what I did. I have an eD eQ.2, so I can only control two bands, plus use phase to my advantage as well. I have HUGE room gain, so I started with a 18hz to 30hz cut by the full 15 dB, and it is still not enough
. I then used the upper frequency dial to boost the 45hz to 59hz by about 5-10db. It responded, and now I have a pretty darn flat response down to 16hz.

Is doing this boost ok, or are all boosts bad?

You may be flat but you probably decreased your headroom available. Will that matter? It depends on your listening levels. 10dB increase is 3 doublings of watts!! Most likely you wil be clipping your sub amp during most scenes that have +15dB peaks, meaning +25dB peaks in the 45Hz to 59Hz range.

I have the eQ.2 and I have done a similar think like you to obtain a flat response. I found that setup did limit my performance (clipping). You have to also remember that EQing with the eQ.2 is very limited and you are just EQing one mic position in the room. I would let Audyssey do this type of EQing, Im just waiting on the Audyssey pro now to set my own curves.
