Been lurking for awhile and appreciate the wealth of information.

I just finished building a new house and will have the HT in the great room for now until I finish the basement and have a dedicated HT in a year or two.

The room is 19x17 with 28' high ceilings  In addition, it is also wide open on one side to the rest of the house.

Is anything adequately going to fill this room, or should I buy something as a stopgap until the "real" HT is finished?

I was looking at either the Dayton 10" to get me by or the SVS PB10-ISD for more of a long term solution. I'd like to stay under $400 for the sub.

TIA

With a volumous room like that you need a sub which will have relatively flat response without much low frequency gain from the room.

For under $400 the PB10-ISD would be a good option. If you are building a real, dedicated room, then you can add a second when you get serious in that room.

How big will the dedicated HT room be? Do you have any plans to make it dual use for music as well? For your budget and a room the size your in now I would think the SVS is a good way to go. I have always liked the accuracy of sealed subs myself, but a good sealed that will fill that room will be over budget. At my house we have a small HT setup with some Klipsch and a TV in the living room. The plan is to upgrade to Rockets and a projector in the dedicated room over time. This way the tv can be used for gaming and regular programming and save bulb life on the projector, but still have 5.1. I bring this up as you may end up needing two subs as I will and can plan for the future now. Best of luck to you and let us know what you choose. Shoot us some pics of that room when you get it going too. :)

Hey Russ, if you see shelly1 please give her my warmest regards. ;) I was told she just moved into your neighborhood from des moines and is quite a musician. Maybe you two can start a band. :D

Is the 28' high ceiling a typo or correct? If correct, the volume of this one room is 9044 plus the adjacent room. I'd suggest you look at something more than a 10" sub.

This room will be not easy to pressurize at reference levels. I doubt any sub in the $400 range will be able to do it.

e-mail SVS support - Tom will be able to size one for you according to your listening habits.

Not a typo and that was my fear. It's not only an adjacent room, there is no wall on one side of the room that is open to the rest of the house.

I knew the 10" wasn't adequate, but I really just need something to get me by for a year or so until I finish the basement. That room will be about 14x20 with an 8' ceiling.

I think I will be happy with the SVS in the permanent HT, possibly adding a second one and will simply have to live with it for now in the voluminous room.

You need pie radius squared (the area of a circle) and a whole lot of power to begin to fill the room.

What is the rest of your budget? Maybe you can steal from another category.

I'm looking at the Athena F2 for the fronts and have Sonance in walls for the rears.

I have seen suggestions to use the Athena B2 as the center. Do I go that route or go with the C1 or C.5 which audioadvisor has a special on right now?
