sub not working - stereo in or impedence the problem?

1239 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JB3
i have acquired a sub from a friend of mine and i'm not sure what to do with it. i have it hooked up but can't get anything out of it but an annoying hum.

1) the sub has a stereo input whereas my receiver (Yamaha HTR-5840) has a single sub output. i've read that i should be able to hook the receiver up to a single input on the sub and be fine but its not working. do i need a Y-connector to plug both inputs on the sub?

2) i noticed that the sub has an impedence of 4 ohm (so does my center but it's working just fine). i switched the speaker impedence setting in my reciever from 8 ohm min to 4 ohm min and it did nothing. the manual states that, even when set at 4 ohm min, the center, surround and sub should all be 6 ohm or higher. could the impedence be my problem?

i have added a y-connector to complete the sub connection but it made no difference. i've even tried hooking it up through the hi-level connections and got nothing. i'm starting to think i have a dud on my hands.

What kind of subwoofer is it?
pro dynamics. unsure of the model number.

I'm not familiar with Prodynamics. I googled it, but couldn't find anything on it.

Does the subwoofer have its own amplifier? If it doesn't, then you will have to get a separate amplifier for the subwoofer.
If it has an amp, (I'm assuming that it does) and you tried both the line level and speaker level connections try seeing if it has a fuse built in for the power supply. There should be a green light that shows the subs amp is on. No blown fuse, or light then you probably have a dud.

What does your friend have to say?
there is a red light by the power switch in back which does light up when plugged in and turned on. the fuse looks good too.

my friend never used it so he is of little help.
Does it have an auto on function? If it does when you play heavy bass material, does the light go to green to show the amp is on?

The impedance switch has nothing to do with your sub. The input impedance of the sub (powered) is very high so it has no effect on the setting. Just for note-the impedance setting has to do with the outputs that have a speaker output not line signals.

You might try the settings on your reciever setup. Is your setup programmed for the LFE output? That might make a difference. Connect the sub to another output (left or right). If you still do not get a signal, then the sub is probably not working.

You said you were getting a hum. How loud is it? If it is fairly loud, then you probably have an output failure inside the sub amp and the speaker is getting a modulated DC signal. Does the speaker cone jump out or in and stay there when you turn it on? If so the amp is bad.
sound like a dead amp in the sub. i have an old carver sub doing the same thing...
i just hooked the sub out from the player directly to the back of the sub (instead of going through the receiver) and it worked! i also moved it away from the mess of speakers it was near and the hum went away.

now on with the bad news...

this leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the sub out from my receiver. i've tried turning it on and off within the receiver setup and that didn't help. it didn't work for multichannel or dd/dts either, so i know its not just multi-channel related. could my receiver be faulty?
