My amp has a "subwoofer out" connection which is one RCA plug.

My subwoofer has two connection options:

option 1) run the front speaker outputs from the amp into the sub and then run from the sub to the speakers.

option 2) L & R RCA plugs that are supposed to connect to pre out on the amp (which I don't have).

I have been using option 1, but a home theater guy that I have pulling some wires for me just told me that I should run an RCA cable from the amp's sub-out into one of the connectors on the sub that are for pre out.

I know that pre-out is not a powered/amplified line, but I don't know if sub-out is a powered/amplified line. If I connect the sub-out into the pre-out plugs on my sub, would that damage the sub?

Obviously, if I do this I would need to turn off all of the filters on the sub.

Should I do this or does the guy not know what he is talking about?

Take the sub out of the front mains line. Run a single RCA cable from the amp's SW pre-out to either the left or right RCA input on the sub. It is a powered sub.

Set the crossover on the sub to it's highest setting or disable it if that is an option. Set the crossover on the amp to 80Hz and set the satellite channels to small.

You're now good to go until you are ready to dial in the system.

Yes, your audio guy is correct.

If you are just running 2 channels (stereo) for music, your current setup might be better. If you're running 5.1 for HT, change the setup as suggested.
