sub placement? and what's a shaker?

761 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Doc99
Just wondering where people are placing there subs. Should it be place in the front or back near seating?

Also, these shaker(buttkickers) are made for a rubble effect, but how are they powered and what kind of stereo is needed..requirements.

As you can see I'm new and most of the thread I read are somewhat advanced. Thanks.

I place my subwoofer near the left front speaker, however placement is very dependent on the room. You can also opt for a nearfield placement (i.e. behind the couch or endtable arrangment).

A buttkicker is a tactile transducer, and requires a separate amplifier. The ButtKicker LFE kick is going for $299 in the AVS forum Power buys and Specials section.

Here's a link comparing buttkickers and shakers.

Some say that you should first put the sub in the center of the room. Then, walk around the room and determine what spot in the room the sub sounds best. Put the sub in that location. Usually, you'll find that it sounds good in a corner of the room.
the buttkickers receive the LFE signal from your receiver for input. you use a y-cable to split the LFE signal out to your sub, and to the buttkicker amp. the buttkicker amp is used to drive the buttkicker(s). the amp has ample power, and includes very useful filters to adjust the response to the buttkickers to the LFE signal.
I just looked at their web page. What model is most popular? Thanks.

Hmmm, I've always heard you should put it in your listening position, then do the same thing.

NO. You should actually place the sub in the LP (your chair, couch, lofty perch, whatever) and CRAWL around the room listening for best bass response. Then switch positions with the sub. This is also known as the "Dr. Hsu crawl test".
A lot of good points about sub placement and I'll try both.

I meant to say in a earlier post that I looked at the buttkicker site. Which model is most popular (bk2)? And is anyone using their amp? Thanks.
I find for music, the sub sounds better near the front speakers, to the right or left. The bass is clearer, and more detailed. My second position is near the corner next to the couch(listening position). This spot tends to exaggerate the bass more, and becomes slightly boomy, and stronger! I find this position better for HT.
